Final Drive Ratio Questions

What exactly does this alter? I'm stupid when it comes to transmissions. How come no one has yet tried to change the 6spd final drive ratio? It seems the M3 guys and the Domestic guys get great gains from it. Is it something I should look into?

It gives the engine a better "mechanical advantage" for turning the wheels. It's a torque multiplier. It helps the car accelerate faster. The downside is the RPM's will be higher.

If you've ever tried to accelerate a 10 speed bike from a standing start in the wrong gear you'll understand importance of the final drive ratio.

I asked about a lower final drive ratio and was told nobody makes them.

If car makers would quit changing the engine and drivetrain every 2 years we would have more aftermarket parts to choose from.

Final drive*first gear ratio=Ratio of enging rpm to wheel rpm
CL 5spAT 4.428*2.56=11.35
My RWD celica had 4.88, *3.29=16.0
Camaro has 4.11 *3.06=12.67

its probably tougher on fwd cars b/c of the tranny/differential integration

on a rwd with a removable carrier not much has to come apart to change the gearsets

what cars can we take final drives from?

You would have to get a set made. Would cost too much.

It's not tough, there just aren't enough cars with our trasmission to make it cost effective. And everybody would want a different ratio.

I think all cars that use this A/T trans have the same ratios. MDX and Accord are the same as the CL.

so I just need to have the final gear made right? That can't possibly be that expensive to have fabricated.

o yeah, and I run a 6speed manual btw...

Some weird tire sizes will also change the ratio. Not sure which ones though.
