Feeler: Custom intake manifolds?

I am currently developing an intake manifold from the heads up. Has this been done before? Any interest in me building a few more? Here are a couple pics of the flanges that I had water jetted. I will build a mock up soon so you can get an idea of what it looks like so stay tuned!

Is this all the way to the TB?

Yes it will. I have an auto with vsa so I was going to try a delete as well, moving the thottle body into its place and connecting the manifold to that. 6-Speeders would need to have it made differently or cut their intake pipe down.

Yea, I would be interested if the numbers are showing. What are you going to do about the VSA TB sensor?

Intake manifolds have been built for the J in the past.

What size are the ports? If youre doing it from the heads up, what are you doing for the injector bases? How are you mounting the injectors to ensure the fuel atomizes properly? What TB are you going to run? I also assume you are removing the IABs? What material are you building it out of?

The ports will be matched at the cylinder head to match the gasket. The stock runner inside diameter was around 1.75in. My runner tube is 1.875in inside diameter, mandrel bent, which will be routed with a 1/2in radius for a velocity stack into the plenum using the flange show in the picture. I would like to use the stock throttle body for now as to make this as bolt on as possible but a larger TB is always an option.

Im building everything out of 6061-T6 aluminum. The flanges have a 1/2in thickness for strength and for the velocity stack routing. The plenum will made from 1/8in material again looking for strength. As for the injectors everything will be done to try and match the stock mounting design using machined aluminum tubing to give them a snug fit.

My goals are:
-To take out the split after the throttle body, eliminating the two 90° turns and have the air flow into one large plenum.
-Still fit under the stock hood. =P
-As plug and play as possible.

This is really just an experiment and the results may not be spectacular the first time around.

I'm interested to see what comes from this. I just ordered the 09 tl intake manifold for my car.

i often though about maintaining the stock manifold but modifying it to have 2 TBs going straight in ,instead of the "Y" "T" whatever u wanna call it

Assuming this would not be cheap, I think we all would like to see proof that this would see more gains than say a ported j32 mani or a 3.7 manifold and if those gains with justify the increase in price from the other 2 options. I'm sure it would LOOK baller though, and more of a target market might be the people swapping j's into civics and such if its short enough that they can close their hood as I know a lot of them face that problem

either way i think all us CL power searchers would love to see a before and after dyno (hopefully the same day to minimize different variables). good luck with everything and I cannot wait to see it.

hopefully it looks sleek and not straight overkill like most one off manifolds. that way it looks more like a product than a supermod LOL... but that's only my opinion

either way we all are routing for you

It all depends on what you want really. I would be able to tailor to which rpm band you wanted to hit all in the design. Mid rpm is my real target, though, with a touch of high rpm gains. And I agree with a before and after dyno on the same day, nothing changed but the manifold itself.

As for pricing... so far with just material and water jetting (which was just for one, multiple builds with lower this cost) I am sitting at about 360 dollars. I can't say what a price would be to produce multiple manifolds since I don't know if I will build more since Im still in the testing phase to see if the price would be worthy of the power gained.

Might be to late but you might also want to make it out of materials that don't get as hot, like the 09 tl intake manifold that is made out of magnesium. It doesn't get as hot and It is lighter weight

I'd rather have ITB's personally but fitment is tight

i'm pretty sure it's magnesium alloy and not straight magnesium as it catches fire kinda easy. either way it is expensive as hell i bet in comparison and not worth the extra effort it would require to put it together.

You might have better luck building a manifold out of titanium then magnesium....

And the manifold OP is building is aluminum. It should still be pretty light. My new manifold without the TB weighs in at ~6lbs. IIRC thats 5lbs lighter then the 3.7l manifold and top cover.
