Falling in love
I have been looking at the RX8. I don't know how serious I am about buying one. I am happy with the CL-S...but for some reason I have been spending a lot of time looking at other cars and the RX8 is gorgeous IMO. Plus car magazines are jizzing all over it. I sat in one at the auto show and it is pretty nice. What do you think?

first of all, your freinds always seem to be buying pickups.
second... i have heard anything from 14-30, mostly in the 19-20 area. shit, my car doesnt get much better living in NYC.
what i really want is a Black M3. But, that isn't attainable quite yet.

Isn't the car also overrated on power? Mazda reported it was getting higher power than it really was and dealers were having people sign waiver forms when they bought the cars saying they acknowledge that the amount of power that the car actually gets is less than what mazda reported.
in addition, i just feel it's way overpriced. it does kinda look cool, but for the money you can get a very nice 350Z

You can actually get a really good deal on one considering they are selling very slow, at least around here. They are HEAVY though for such a little car. Also, they aren't fast at all. Mid to low 15s is what I've seen at the track. As far as handling goes, that's a different story.
It looks really, really cool... but needs a little more something under the hood.

I went to the "Mazda Rev it up" day at Shea Stadium, test drove, raced in all MAzda cars that day, last sunday, Wasnt impressed at all with the new 3 and 6!!! They also had the RX-8 6-speed that I test drove, I liked it, was comfy, but in my opinion I got spoiled with the CL-S! With all the accessories(leather, xenon, etc) the car is way over priced!! But if it will make you happy then go ahead!

I was a sign of the papers away from trading my CL-S in for a fully loaded RX8 6 speed, heres why I didn't get it.
1.) Underpowered. Yea, C&D gets it to 60 in 6 secs, but thats with a 7000rpm clutch drop. Also, you are constantly rowing the gears trying to get power out of it. The horrid lack of torque compared to my CL-s, makes passing hard.
2.) MPG. 14-15 mpg? ahh no sorry. Gas is expensive enough already.
3.) I'd say 40-50% of RX8 owners on the RX8 boards have had to have their ECU's reprogrammed due to hard starts, rough idles or slow throttle responce.
4.) Its a Mazda. This is not so much a reference to Mazda cars (cough: Ford : cough) but Mazda dealers. I went to three Mazda dealers in my area and the salesmen there and the customer service in general was terrible. Picture your typical sleezly car salesman.
5.) Expensive. 33k???!! For that money I am going with a new TL, G35 or a Bimmer. Better service, better name, and most importantly, built better.
6.) Last one and the deciding factor for me. I love my CL-S. I have never had a better car. Everytime I think I want to trade it in, I realize how much I love it and what a good car it is.
But do what you want. I dunno what your situation is. I think its a GREAT looking car, both inside and out. But otherwise, it wasn't worth giving up a CL-S that I already own free and clear.

I too, own mine free and clear. That is what prevents me from jsut taking the plunge on just about anything. The main thing that kills me is that I have an auto...which I hate. So, that is why i look. But, i don'w want to get into debt up to my ears just for a car. You know what I mean? I have been looking at G35's, 330Ci's, and M3's as well. I am sure i could swing it, whether new or slightly used (depends on the deal i am getting) But, is it worth it. Especially, since this car is for the most part, dependable and problem free.

I've definitley been hearing some horror stories on the gas milage of the Rx8. A very nice car, looks great with wheels.. speaking of...seeing those Hiro's all over the place now!

why would you want this over a 350z, g35, s2000
seems like the rx8 underperforms in all categories of comparison to similarly priced coupes
edit: and its uglier

Safety Car
I had an rx-8 as a loaner for about a week.
+:
- Styling is unique, and gets lots of looks
- Nice and low to the ground
- GREAT handling...made me do some crazy shit...there is a 180-degree hairpin turn near where I live for a freeway onramp...I LOVED going down that
-:
- Navi is a PAIN in the ass to use, and is fucking annoying. Most of the time I had it turned off. Total waste in my opinion
- Power is non-existant. Not a drag racer at all
If you want the car for handling, get a mazdaspeed miata. If you want handling + more speed, get an s2000. Otherwise get a 350z. Dont get the rx-8

I'm a rotary guy owning a mint 1984 RX-7, which is heavily modded.
Anyway, I like the RX-8 and there are already mods with more on the way and rotaries love boost.

i also love the RX8.... honestly, id pimp one over a Z. Z's are a dime a dozen these days. I almost went for the G35 coupe back when i was lookin for a new whip. only reason i didnt was because it was RWD... cant be havin that in philly wit these snow storms. im kinda glad i didnt get one though cause like the Z, everyone and their mom pimps one of those these days. im not trash talkin it cause the g35 is nice. i would have considered so many other cars... RWD is a bitch. Not to hi jack your thread here but has anyone drivin a new lincoln LS V8? i test drove one a few months back... GODDAMN was it awesome. it was fast, roomy, nice interior and i was so surprised at how well it handled. Yet again, if it wasnt real wheel drive, id be pimpin it

I like the styling of the RX-8 also. One thing that excites me about it is revving to 9k wow...I know I know S2k, but RX8 has a little more room to move (in the cabin).

I think its a great looking car inside and out, so for cruising with 19's its great, but its not really all that fast compared to the s2000 and z. I'm 6'4 and got in the back no prob which was pretty cool, but it would have been better as a hatchback with a turbo4 from the mps6.

RX-8 is such a sweet car. Yeah, I heard that it's relatively slower than the comparable cars such as Z, G35 Coupe and S2000, but not by much..(I'm talkin' bout 0-60) Personally, I'd go for a better handling car than a little faster car so my choice would be RX-8. (I never race nor take my car to track) Plus, those Z and G35 coupes are everywhere and S2000 isn't as practical as RX-8 (not that I'm saying RX-8 is that of a practical car) RX-8 is rare and styling is unique.

I rode in one. They are cool cars. You should drive one and see how you like it. Personally I would miss the torque of the CL-S. IMO it's a little too much car to be powered by a rotary. It's no RX-7.

They seem to like the oil as well:
From this article:
http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/pw/04rx8.htm
A Mazda service bulletin recommends checking the oil every second fill-up, and topping up as necessary. In practice, this is difficult and inconvenient. The dipstick is buried in the engine bay, where it’s hard to find and reach. Once removed, you find the dipstick is the same colour as the oil, so it’s hard to determine the level. And at night, it’s impossible to replace without a flashlight. You simply can’t find the entry point.
To make matters worse, adding oil requires removing the plastic engine shroud to expose the engine. This is not a big job, but it takes some effort. It’s odd that the filler cap is not easily accessible, given the frequency with which you’re expected to top up the oil. The oil light came on several times during my road test, usually when it was down about a half-litre (a bit alarming in these days of changing your oil every 12,000 km).

you buy a car because:
1 you like the car
2 it fits your needs
3 it is within your budget
4 it is a good, reliable car
if you make the primary reason to not buy a car just cuz you've seen a lot of them on the road then what's the point of buying any car,
i see plenty of fords, mazda's, A HELL OF A LOT OF ACURA'S & HONDA's, and other makes.
but i still bought another acura because I liked the car. I could care less what other people have as long as i'm happy with what i have.

There is a reason why you see More Zs than Rx8s.
