Facts about AEM
Facts about AEM
I normally do not do this, but it has been brought to my attention that there is some miss understandings about the dyno figures AEM gave to this board out of good faith.
1. First and foremost we measure all our chassis data using a DynoJet dynamometer. They are very accurate and repeatable. We do 3 dyno runs per change and average the runs for a more realistic look at the information. We are not into making magical horsepower and if at anytime a run looks be abnormal we will continue to dyno that change until we have a more consistent reading to use for the average. In the case of the CL Type-S we made over 50 runs during the design of the intake. We are constantly tweaking because every single horsepower and foot-pound of toque counts.
2. We plot all our Dyno results in Excel. Why? By doing the graph in Excel the information is much more usable. I can plot the area under the power curve. Compare multiple changes simultaneously and most importantly make it easy available to output in any type of media. Our contacts at the various magazines especially like this.
3. Why is there such a big gripe over the fact that the title on the dyno figures we supplied to your board had an error on the year? May the first person that has never made a mistake or a miss spelling throw the first stone? I personally apologize for the mistake, but I think all that should matter in the end is what you'll be gaining from the information. No BS horsepower and torque gains.
4. I am only one of the 4 people we have in our Research and Development department. Not only do we use a DynoJet as one of our tools for designing our intakes, but we also use Air Flow Data, Parametric 3D Modeling Software and a 3D Measuring Machine to produce our product. Not to mention the fact we have a 20,000 square foot manufacturing facility. It's fully equipped with CNC Mills, Lathes and Tube bending equipment. Every operation needed to produce an intake or any of our other products is done in house.
5. Just to give you an idea we ship over 5,000 intakes a month. Why? Because we make a product that we stand 100% behind. We have been a leader in this market segment for sometime and we are not planning to go anywhere. Our quality speaks for itself.
6. We always encourage all the magazines to test our products and they do. You can look into any issue of Import Tuner and see one of our intakes be tested in their power pages. In Sport Compact Car they rated us as having the best intake in the market. That says a lot about our ability to design and produce a good product.
I am one who has always enjoyed the spirit of competition and I hope people continue to knock the work we have done. It just tells me that we are doing something right. Thank you guys for letting me have this time to clear some things up. Oh BLXMX, my friends at American Honda loved your CL; they want to know when we can take it to lunch again.

discounting the 0-3000 RPM numbers, both AEM and Xephyr are producing similar results!!!!
Check both graphs from 3000-6850 RPM and compare....

Well, from every intake that I have ever seen. You lose torque at the low end and gain horsepower at the high end. It's normal. Just hope your high end makes up for the loss at the low end.

The response we have had with our CL Type-S Cold Air Intake has been great! Our Power Pulleys will be available soon and with the introduction of the TL Type-S later in the year, AEM will be developing even more products for your vehicle. Keep your eyes open, the fun has just begun.

Ya better believe the fun has just begun.
I have been wanting to see you make pulleys for the CLS since I bought the car in June. I sent AEM an email about it and said that you would not be developing one for quite a while. So, when you do get one tested and tuned, please post it here. Greatly appreciated.
Good work on the CAI. I wanted to ask
1. why does it go so low (i.e. almost touching the bottom plastic)and
2. why no bypass valve?
I would really enjoy getting info from the horse's mouth. Thanks.

Too bad they didn't allow for the use of the bypass valve without doing the hacksaw routine.
