I don't even consider the factory keyless entry an alarm.

I just got a new alarm installed. It has remote start, shock sensor, dual field mass sensor, and a vehicle paging system which tells you the status of your car from about a quarter mile away. Plus it has a diagram on the remote that tells you which zone has been violated. And it has this thing called a Vehicle paging system where you knock on this sensor and the car will page you but wont set off the trigger. I don't know if it will be any use but at least it's there. And the best part is that I can still use my stock alarm if I want to at the same time. About $700 including install.

What you are describing is an alarm from Computstar (www.compustar.org)it is a good alarm, I have it myself, one problem - be very very carefull with the remote, it has a tendency to die on you. DOn't be surprised if you will have to walk circles around the car trying to find a spot where that thing will actually work ( but thats only when you are like really close to the car) and forget about 1/4 mile. 1/4 mile thats in a field with no interference of any sort. In a city you'll be lucky if it works more than 1 long block or 2-3 short ones.

I had a Clifford G4 Solaris installed when I first got the car. Works great, even has remote start. No complaints at all.

Yeah, its Compustar. But I haven't had any of the problems that you describe yet. The only thing that required some attention is the adjustment of the field sensor. I tested the range at about 3-5 blocks. Maybe in NY there's more interference.

Webtoker do you have a pager to go with the clifford? Or anything to notify you that the car actually started? I would say remote start is pretty useless if you have no idea if it worked or not.

No need to, I can hear it start ;-) Comptech helps me out with that. My parking lights turn on also. I use the remote start most when I am stoping at a store and just want to run in. I don't even turn the car off. Just hit a button, remove the keys, and jump out.

Try it and post weather it works or not. I know the old version of Compustar did that but this one does not seem to want to do it

Ok guys I think I posted this be4 but here it is again. If you think that the stock alarm is inadequate (which it is) you have two options either add-on alarm which is an addition of shock sensors to the existing one, or a whole new alarm.

First the problem with stock alarm - it only goes off if the door is open, however if someone breaks a window (which will not set it off) and hits the master unlock the alarm turns off so you can open the door.

Now the add-on alarm (I know viper makes one) does make things better by adding shock sensors to the factory so breaking the window without setting off the alarm would not be possible. But the price does not justyfy such an upgrade.

The separate alarm is the most flexible option, you can add options that you want (mine opens windows, and closes when I lock the car), you can add remote start to the car. So a separate alarm is the best way to go. You don't even have to eliminate the factory alarm, just don't turn it on

The only problem left is this, the chip in key is what is controlling our stock immobilizers, now if install the remote start you would need to leave the chip somewhere in the car, because it would not start unless there is a key present in the vehicle. This might make the car more vulnurable to being stolen, but then again if you got an alarm with remote start it probably came with an immobilizer of its own.

Hope this was useful to someone

Don't forget, if you have remote start put in, use an uncut key. I had mine hidden real good but the fact that its uncut helps me sleep also. Another thing, the Solaris has a awesome immobilizer.

Yes I agree about the uncut key, however IT IS THERE. So the factory immobilizer thinks that the key is there and is therefore off. So now the only thing between a crook and your car is a NEW immobilizer and lack of cut key(which quite frankly noone needs = I used to have a screw driver instead of the key in my dodge )

The cool thing about the Clifford is the fuel cut off. Along with many other features you can add.

Basically what both of use are trying to say is the only way they are getting to are car is if they have a tow truck along with a car going crazy.

Yeah one problem try setting off your alarm and picking up the front wheels with the tow truck, the alarm will shut up and will not go off. They can tow it, and the only time the alarm is going to go off is when the are actually hooking it up. Stupid yes, has its uses yes.

If there are any vibrations it will conintue to go off. Has nothing to do with the wheels not being on the ground.

As I said try it, lift it with a tow truck, not a jack, and then hit something. I highly doubt that it will go off. Since we have the same alarms, I am going to try it today, since I have to get it towed, and I don't have a flatbed

So why do you have this theory? I can think of no logical reason why this would be true with the Solaris.

Its not a theory, its something about regulations. Basically if the car needs to be towed it should not make noise each time it hits a bump I will find the description of this and will post

For all information on 2000AS go to www.compustar.org they have all the manuals on how to do what. However, unless you really know what you are doing don't do it! Take it to the shop where they installed it, they have to adjust it for free.

I think you are thinking of alarms that have a mercury switch that disables the alarm when it gets towed (car gets tilted, mercury slides). I don't think *all* alarms have this, because my old car had an alarm (forget which brand) and when it was towed, the towing company said it was ON the whole way. This was a while ago and alarms may now be regulated, but I know for sure that it wasn't always this way.

This is not true. When you activate the stock alarm, there is a 30 second delay. After that it is armed. If someone breaks the window (or you leave it open), as soon as they hit any of the unlock switches the stock alarm goes off. You can only turn it off with the remote.

Also, our hood (and trunk) is also alarmed. So if you break the glass and pop the hood (to try to disconnect the battery), the alarm will go off as soon as the hood release is pulled.

The only thing we are missing is a shock sensor. There has to be an inexpensive one available that can be tied in??

And the alarm shutting off when the front wheels are up, I think I seen a arnold movie in which he did that to shut off an alrarm. he just picked up the front and the damn thing shut off. Wasn't sure if it was just holly wood or true at the time.

Nighthawk, Where did you get your compustar at? I'm also in the DC metro area, and the Compustar looks really intresting, I was gonna go with a Clifford Avantguard 4, with is around 750 installed, but the vehicle paging system seems intresting and the lcd display on the remote.
