Exposed battery ground wire?

Exposed battery ground wire?
Can you guys confirm on your cars.
I noticed the other day the ground cable from the battery going down the engine to I guess the starter is exposed a good 7 or so inches. Is that normal?
If it is, wouldn't that cable corrode?
