Exhaust systems and Mufflers

I've read some threads on here, but wanted to know what you guys reccomend as far as exhaust systems go for our cars. I want something that isnt obnoxious, but sounds nice, and isnt too loud. Any feedback is appreciated....

If borla makes a catback system for the cl I'd start saving lol. I've got 2 savings accounts right now, one is for the cl and the other is for the mods and I think I'm gonna go with a comptech catback (or borla, if they make one) paired with ebay headers and stock cat.

Kind of a bottle neck at the cat but it's the chance I have to take in order to pass emissions.

i will probably buy the comptech axlebacks when im ready to upgrade --- they sound real nice when u get on it, but not obnoxiously loud when cruising through suburban neighborhoods

CT is the only one that's a simple direct bolt on. Anything else is going to be custom installation.
I've had CT's on 2 CL's & think it's just right for this type of car.

From what I have seen , i thought the Greedy Evo 2 was the BEST sounding catback system that I have heard on the CL.

Wait when you say axle back you mean just running mufflers? Please don't bash me as I'm not familiar with these cars (as I don't have one yet).

I found an HKS axle back exhaust for around 450 bucks, has anyone heard HKS on the cl's? I wouldn't mind going with them, or borla.

I know an exhaust shop that's done custom work for me in the past, they've got a mandrel bender, it might be cheaper to just get them to do a custom job right after the cat to the mufflers. What size pipes are healthy to use?

Yeah HKS is a good brand to. When I had my Accord, I went with a 2 1/2 piping all the way through, sounded nice.

+1 for Comptechs, and the best part is that if you can find a pair of quiet tip inserts, you can go from sweet sound to no sound whenever you need/want to.

See that's perfect, it sounds stock when you're idling until you rev it up, I like that. They must sound awesome under engine load.

What about Tanabe catback? Seen pics of it but no sound clips. Just bought a 03 CLS6 and really don't mind if it's loud.

I've got HKS Superdragers. They're alright, not too droney or overpowering. They have a really sweet tone from about 3000rpm until vtec kicks in.

Fuzzy, you said that your cans got deeper over time...I have heard this too. I just put on Magnaflows and am wondering how the sound will change - how much driving did you do before the CTs settled on their final sound?

I didn't keep track, I really didn't notice the change until maybe a year after. I've put about 20K miles on the car since install.

Ok, thanks. I think I have noticed something already even after only about a week.

Furthering this exhaust thread (and since the new site seems to have temporarily lost all ability to search), what do you guys think:

Currently I have magnaflows and all stock exhaust otherwise. I am thinking of removing the mid-muffler to give it some more balls. Do you think it would be overly loud this way? I want to hear it, but I dont want to sound like it's straight piped. Also, if I do that would I benefit from swapping the resonator for an 18 inch magnaflow or would that not really make a difference?

I will tell you right now if you take that stock resonator out its gonna sound good. Trust me.

My mufflers ere on the car when i got it and don't have and markings that I've been able to find, so I have no idea what they are, but they sound phenomenal. A pic is below and I'll record some video when either it stops raining or I get over this cold.

They look like such:

I didn't use any piping. The mufflers are a direct bolt on. They only replace the stock mufflers.
