exhaust question

Hello all,

I am trying to figure out a part of the exhaust. In the service manual, it shows it, but does not say what it is, or what it is for? It is the 'can' between the catalytic converter and the split for the mufflers. Is this something that is needed? I found a wrecked car with magna flow exhaust and they did not have this can. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

That's a resonator aka mid-muffler. Helps keep exhaust drone down. Your don't need it and many guys remove it for a louder exhaust tone. If you find it loud after you put it on, have a shop weld in a magnaflow resonator.
