i hear they're going to start mixing ethanol into the gas in california. how does that affect the gas and the car's performance? anyone?

In the manual it says that the Type-S can take gasoline up to 10% ethanol if I'm correct (someone check to make sure...). I wonder if they do start doing this will they call it gasohol like in S. America? Dunno about performence issues tho....

The ethanol is added to help reduce emissions. The amounts in which it's added to regular gasoline does not affect the perfomance of the car. You've been using gasoline with additives for years; in the past it's been MTBE, which has been labeled a possible carcinogen. (Good to know, huh?)

Ethanol can damage the fuel system and engine if it's used in higher quantities such as E85, which is 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. Only vehicles specifically designed to run on this fuel should use it, but E85 cars, also known as flex fuel vehicles, can run on normal gasoline. In this form it also reduces the range by about 20%, but it significantly reduces emissions in comparison to regular gas.

In short, ethanol as an additive will not affect the performance of your car, but it will help to reduce smog forming gases. Now, how do I know about this stuff? It's what I do for a living--the alternative fuels industry. Hope this helps.

Will Ethanol make our fuel economy worse like MTBE does?
(Anybody calculate that when they decide if it's worth it to put all this crap in our gas anyway??)

It shouldn't appreciably lower the fuel economy. The EPA, DOE and DOT have all done tests on ethanol as a gasoline additive and their results say the environmental benefits outweigh the miniscule (if any) loss in fuel economy. Depending on how much ethanol the corn growers and refineries decide to produce, it could even lower the price of gas by a dime or so.
