Engine gets hot when idle
I have noticed with increasing frequency that my when I am sitting idle in the car that my engine temp rises till it is very near the top of the gauge, at which time the AC cuts off and blows hot air on me. Once I start moving again, everything is fine, which make sense because the air is then running over the radiator. I have also noticed that my fan still runs after I have gotten out of the car, so I don't think it is the fan motor?
Anyway, just curious if anyone else has had a similar problem so I know what to expect?

My money is still on the water pump. A continual running fan is a sign of failure of a water pump. Touch your upper and lower radiator hose, if they are burning hot, it's the pump.
Air in coolant lines will only spike the temp gauge. Radiator overflow tube? Doesn't tell much about cooling except the level of the coolant available in the reservoir.

You should try fixing things in the cheapest order.
1. Check out the fluid. Make sure no air in the coolant.
2. Check/replace t-stat, fan switch.
3. If still doing it, replace water pump.

Are you still under warranty? Extended warranty? If it is the water pump have them do the timing belt at the same time. Won't cost you anymore except for the cost of the belt.

always do cheapest first. My first thought was thermostat, but it could be caused by any of those things.

thanks for all the input... I am going to top it off with coolant first, and I will probably see tomorrow on my commute if that fixes the problem. If not, I wonder how much a replacement fan motor is? I know one fan works, but I am not sure that both of them do. How much effort is it to replace the thermostat?
Anyone know of an online site where I can order these types of parts?

If it is the water pump that has failed they will cover it and i'd have them replace the timing belt at the same time. You need to remove the timing belt to remove the water pump.

Ok, this PISSES me off. It was almost half a gallon low on coolant. I take my car in to have the oil changed and EVERY place says that they top off the coolant.... I even looked at my last receipt, and yes the mechanic check the box for topped off coolant. LIES, ALL LIES.
By the way, that fixed the problem... drove 600 miles this weekend, no problem.
