Dyno'ed at 179HP

I've got a 1999 TL-P (53K Miles) with Comptech headers and Icebox. 179 HP at the wheels seems low.

The way I figure it is that if stock is 225 HP at the crank, add around another 20-25HP for the headers and intake and I should be around 245-250 at the crank. If I'm at 179HP at the wheels, that means that I've got a loss of 65-70HP through the drivetrain. That's a 26-28% loss.

What do you guys think? Do I have a problem elsewhere? Or is 179HP reasonable?

post the dyno then we can talk... you should expect a loss of 22-23% to the wheels.

The CL-S/TL-S is supposed to have 260/232 at the crank and it only dynos at around 200/180 stock. With headers/cai the dynos usually only get to around 230/200 or so ...

If you assume the same ~25% loss to the wheels, you're right on target.

That sounds pretty low. The 3.0 Cl dynoes around 160-165hp stock and that engine comes with 25 less hp off the bat. Plus you have headers and an icebox.

that does sound really low... i dynoed 187hp to the wheels in my 3.0CL with comptech headers, muffler, pullies and cold air intake..

you should be dynoing around 179 stock

Are you sure? You're right on the hp but I think we don't lose as much tq as we do hp. I think stock CLS dynos 200/190.

Let us see..

225 x0.77 = 173 WHP.

with Headers and CAI... you should be around 195 WHP at least!

So few questions:
1) This is not DynoJet and I am not sure if the numbers are SAE corrected or not
2) When did you have oil and ATF changes, when did you clean the CAI filter.
3) Are your running on stock tires/rims?
4) what did Comptech have to say about the numbers?

Oh finally was really hot-soaked?

I've got something to say about CT dynoes. Everytime they do a dyno they are always doing it in perfect conditions, no humidity, low temps. Correct me if I am wrong but do they do the dynoes in an airconditioned enviorment? I only say this becuase they seem to have higher numbers than those that post their stock dyno runs. But I could be worng. I dynoed my CLS w/ nothing more than a CAI and only achieved 193. Shouldn't I be over 200 easily? Maybe I can attribute it to a poor slipping tranny .

Nashua,
1) I'm not sure
2) ATF fluid flush 10K miles ago with tranny cooler install. Oil changed 2K - 5w30. CAI filter is brand new Icebox.
3) running 03 CL-S wheels with Michelin Pilot A/S 235/45-17
4) Comptech seems to think they are reasonable.

Juker,

Their room is not in an air conditioned environment. They just place a huge fan in front of the car and at the rear of the car to pull the heat out of the bay. The temp is real and humidity is real. When I toured Comptech, they have two engine dynos in the building ( which are probably air conditioned rooms) and one chasis dyno. The chasis dyno sits in a single bay in their shop - not temerature controlled. They keep a car around as a reference vehicle that they don't change and check the dyno periodically. I was hoping that their dyno was conservative and that's why my numbers were low.

I think I'm going to start looking for a used type S.

look at the dyno on comptechs site: http://www.comptechusa.com/images/dyno/1999TLplot.pdf

unfortunately the 99TL has a different, older engine then the current TL-P even though they supposedly make the same amount of power. i have a 99TL also
in 2000 they changed the intake manifold i believe and since it still only was rated 225 at the crank id expect the 99TL to dyno lower

Thanks Dave,

175.9 HP on the 1999 with headers and exhaust. I guess that I'm not too far off.

I'm definitely in the market for a TL-S. Anyone interested in selling or getting out of a lease???
