During cold stars, does your car sound right?
I was warming up my car around 29F, and noticed when I first started something was clicking and making clancking noise in the engine area ( somewhere where belts are ). It was not too bad, but very different when car is completly warmed up.
When car warm up and I drove it for 15 minutes this strange noise was gone, and it was smooth idle again.
My question is whether this is normal? Or this indicates that my belts or pulleys need fixing?
Also, do you know whether belts adjustment is supposed to give you more quiet idle? I have 25K miles and never adjusted belts, maybe thats why?

yeah it happens to my car too. I thought you already posted a thread like this...anyway, some guy had replied saying that every Acura, even the ones on the lot did that. Especially since recently it's been in the teens and twenty's

Its a pressure switch pot (part of the emmissions controls)
meaning to look it up in the sm this week to see exactly how it functions but time is gold right now.
Its mounted near the fire wall to the left of the master brake cylinder. Thats the ticking I think you guys are hearing on those cold mornings

My car makes some strange noises (sometime alarm system chirps among others) on cold morning starts... it has been negative 15 several days and not above 20 degrees for weeks. But then, I make some some strange noises and have trouble getting started on those days too.

My noise sounds like this:
clank-clank-clank-clank (at a very fast rate)...
Then it goes away as car warms up.... Please note, this is NOT the ticking sound (tick-tick-tick) you get from EVAP, this is different.....

It's not emissions-related.. its the valves!! All Honda valves tick when its cold... and when the engine warms up, it goes away.. its the clearance that changes with temp!

True, but not true
Valve tap is one kind of noise and pressure switching is another.
One of the vaccume pots as describled in my above post does click when its real cold, I'm going to snap a pic of the one and post it.

The last day I had my car it was 15*. I gave it 10 seconds to warm up and started to drive. My refurb'ed trannie made a scary, hi-pitched grinding sound for 10 seconds, about a minute into the ride. Maybe referb trannie = low temp, let it warm for a minute.

Engine clicking
I have also recently noticed a clicking noise coming from a solenoid (marked DENSO 211 & PCS33) next to the firewall, to the left of the brake fluid resevoir. It has been extraordinarily cold here in Toronto lately.
I thought that the clicking was the solenoid's death rattle. THIS is NORMAL? Has anyone been told by the dealer that this is not the sign of a dying switch? I was going to bring the car in for an investigation, but I will hold off.

Its not tick-tick, its more like clank-clank-clank ( at a fast rate ).
Then it disapears when the car warms up, its not really cold 32F....
Its probably useless to go to the dealer, from what I heard all Hondas do that sh*t... besides the car has to be cold...

We make LOTS of stuff for all of the car makers. Gears, plastic trim, seat heaters, transmission filters, you get the idea.
illinois Tool Works.
Our "cold side" testing regime is to test at -40F. "Hot side", for other than engine and trans is +190F.
-40F is very hostile, period. When it gets really cold out, be less critical and more kind to your car. After all, the "mean design temperature is about 50F. When things get cold, two things happen. Brittleness increases, and dimensions shrink.
If you would have seen what I have seen regarding testing, I am greatful that cars, in general, even work AT ALL when the temperature is 0 F or less. Cold kills machinery, and the very last thing I want to see fail when it is bitterly cold is, guess, the seat heaters!

Tick No More
As the weather has warmed up, I have noticed an end to the ticking. I won't mind the sound as long as it is not a potential problem.
I was concerned because my 3 year comprehensive warranty expires later this month.
