Driving around Deer

Last night, on my way to my soccer game I was on a backroad in which I must have spotted 10 deer.. They scare the hell out of me.. Any recommendations on those whistles (or other device) to keep them out of my way?

I've heard of people installing air horns for situations like yours.

My uncle lives in upstate NY. He had them on his car, didn't do anything for the deer he crashed into & totaled his car. That's also my biggest fear driving up to NY from FL I drive mostly in the dead of night.

I've heard (in this case, herd?) anecdotal evidence both ways on the deer whistles. I'm not aware of any scientific study at all.

If anybody has information we'd all appreciate it.

The whistles work, but they get pluged from dirt and road debris, so you need to poke a wire thru the hole on a regular basis to keep them working.

I have the Deer horns on my car.
I don’t know if they work, but for 99-cents….Why not.

There are TONS of deer around my place.

this is the ultimate marketing strategy. sell something that "if it really works would be cool", but in reality may not work, for a dollar, and people will buy it. Hey, it's only a dollar right? To the seller that shit adds up FAST. I'm convinced NONE of this shit works; if anything you'll spook a deer into running in front of your car...but it's brilliant marketing and i'll give credit where credit is due. Genius.

I see them all over the place here in the UP. It really puts a damper on my late-night "therapy" drives.

I did some research on this a few years back and found some funny information. Those horns put out a high pitch whistle (sometimes) You need the right air current and correct placement.
Granted they are working correctly, and the heer hear them, some animals wont respond to them at all. And those that do MAY decide to run. But run away they may not. It is supposed to startle them and make them run away. But let if a deer wants to run away. Its away may be right into your path.
I am content seening them standing still eatting along the roads. If a deer is running out across the road, there is no dollar solution to stopping them.

yeah, my cousin has an air horn in place of his car horn; we tried using it because we saw dear in a field, and instead of running into the woods, they just ran toward the car.

... unnatural

I see deer when I jog in the mornings. And I live in a very urban suburb. I could take a bat and have deer chops with my eggs. Some dumb ass probably thinks it is cute to feed them in their back yard.

I also see a lot 'sleeping' on the side of the road.

I live back in the woods as most of you guys know.
Over the years I’ve gotten FOUR “kills” with various cars.
Two with my 88 Daytona Shelby-Z and two with my 91 Legend Coupe.
I also tapped one with my 2001 CL, but all it did was crack the left headlight because I was almost able to stop in time.

The one with my Legend was the most dramatic.
I was driving about 25-30 MPH and I came around a corner.
There was a Chevy Blazer coming towards me with his high beams on and he didn’t dim them.
He also had a set of four of those “off road only” lights on a roof rack.
I had to squint a bit as I approached and I couldn’t see shit.
All of a sudden….BANG I nailed the deer as it ran across the road without even the chance to brake.
I pulled over with my radiator smoking and I noticed the Blazer was still sitting in the middle of the road.
I walked back to tell him I was OK and saw that his entire windshield was caved in.
Here I hit the sucker and flipped it up into the top corner of his windshield.
It didn’t go through, but it bent the A-Pillar & roof.
Did over 5,000 damage to my car and I think it totaled his.

Probably wouldn’t have happened if the fucker would have just dimmed his brights.

The dude was so stupid he even left all the lights on until after the cops came.
I made sure to point this out to the cops when they first got there.

I got one on Rt 100 going to work in the morning a little over a year ago.

Saw it coming, almost dodged. I hit it on the right side of the car and knocked the mirror off and got a bunch of scratches. The deer was still standing and the SUV behind me took it in the grill. Nice buck too.
