Don't miss your 3rd to 4th shift...

Found this from another forum. Lots of pics from an idiot in a RSX downshifting to 4th from 5th. Results are the same for missing a high rpm shift from 3rd to 4th into 2nd.

Don't think TLC will cover this.

Yep, Ive seen that shit a coupl times with s2ks. Youve got to be careful when downshifting those cars. Those engines are already being pushed hard, one slip and BOOM. Bent pistons, blown tranny, tons of other damage all = $$$ and lots of time with no car.

If you do a search on RSX sites. I believe I remember a lot of kids who bought the S when it first came all blew their trannys from the infamous downshift.

Take the close ratio shifter and combine with the fact that some people get to over anxious and try to slam the shifter back rather then lightly moving it and letting it take you to the proper gear itself and BAM you have one messy downshift cause they forced it into 2nd intead of 4th.

wouldn't our rev limiter prevent that? or would it happen regardless?...

Yeah, saw these on another forum as well. Talk about 0wn3d.

I don't know why he wanted to downshift to 4th anyways - he was at redline in 5th. I don't know what he was thinking. Probably wasn't.

Rev limiter won't protect you here. The rev limiter protects you from revving up past the redline. The rev limiter can't protect you from dropping down into a lower gear like he did.

I know someone had said here before that the CL-S 6spd has a gear protector so you can't accidently shift into 1st or Reverse easily (It doesn't prevent you 100% from doing it, it just make it difficult to shift into a lower gear)

This guy is an idiot, if he was more careful when he was shifting, even if he mis-shifted into 2nd from 5th, he would have been able to recover as he let off the clutch he should have been able to catch it and quickly re-engage the clutch. He obviously wasn't being careful and was trying to show off. Of course, just deciding to drop from 5th gear at redline into 4th is dumb to begin with.

Doesn't the RSX have a rev limiter?
I was in a friend's auto a while back and her SS mode didn't do the 1->2 shift automatically... maybe they took out the rev limiter, too?

Shit, I don't know how to drive stick, and even I know not to shift 5->4 when redlining 5! wtf?!

Whaaaa?
So then, really, all it'll do is just cut the gas when accelerating if the rpm ~redline?
I would have thought it would monitor the rpms and disengage gears if it got too high. That way wether you're revving up or dropping a shift it'll stop the thing from spinning itself into suicide.

Perhaps the idiot was trying to get into 6th??? I mean, why in the hell you'd "downshift" when at the redline is beyond me. Going to 6th, sounds like the obvious move, but hell... After seeing the results I can't say for sure...

Damn, that's nasty!!!

ahhh...scary thought...I have definately been timid when I sometimes miss a shift and fish around for 4th...I'll be more careful I guess!

With all of today's technology and abilty you'd think it wouldn't be too much to ask to have the lockouts for the lower gears when you're in a higher gear and at an rpm that would put a lower-gear-change beyond redline.

WTF. Where's the technology?

How stupid is this? NO ONE should have to be worried about this because there should be lock-outs.

If I buy an RSX-S it would be my first stick car and I just KNOW something fucking retarded like that would happen to me. This is why there should be fucking LOCKOUTS on lower gears when you're in high rpm on a certain gear.

Fuck that, I'll just stick to automatics.

don't quote me on this but I think that is why the cL-S has double synchros in 2nd gear...hence the notchy feel to prevent such irratic downshift.

Is there a volunteer willing to try and experiment.

The Acura RSX TypeS features triple-cone synchronizers and a close-ratio 6speed so you can blow the FUCK out of your engine with ease!

Well, the notchy feel will only give you a tactile feel to tell you "you're about to shift into 2nd" ... it won't prevent it. This guy sounds like he was racing the engine and probably shifted it real quick and hard into 2nd, not realizing it.

If he was being more careful he probably could have saved his engine, much like this person did (they put the clutch back on real quick and prevented the engine from grenading) :

EVERYONE misses a shift once and a while.
If someone says they don’t, they’re a liar.
These are usually the same people who say they never stalled the car when first learning stick.

The trick is to “catch” yourself before you fully release the clutch.
This is where good driving technique and experience comes into play.

BTW, there NO-WAY to put some kind of electronic rev-limiter on to avoid this.
The shift lever is a MECHANICAL CONNECTION that you make when you put the car in gear.
If you force it into the wrong position on a downshift, say goodbye to the block like this guy did.
The CL-S 6-Speed has a PHYSICAL barrier that moves into place to prevent grabbing reverse by mistake once you’re moving, but all other gears are available at all times.

I never miss a shift

Ok, I do sometimes, but luckly on the downshifts, I've caught myself before letting the clutch completely out.

The missed shift that I usually do isn't that bad. I find that sometimes I shift from 2nd to 5th (missed 3rd ). It's not bad but when you're trying to merge into traffic it does make it interesting

SMG is just a super advanced SS. im pretty sure its sequential like all the others.

Its really pretty hard to fuck up a manual tranny unless you just dont know what the hell youre doing. The 5th to 2nd downshift is people forcing the shifter into position. You cant do that, you have to lightly guide the shifter and it will take you where it needs to go.

He just need a fully sequential gearbox where you have to go through the gears in order...

I can't say much though as I have slipped it into 2nd from 4th. But thankfully this has not occurred since last September. I was conscious enough to get back on the clutch though.

Actually, the 6th gear isn't where you'd think it'd be on the RSX-S the gear spacing is ODD to say the least. I can see how a mistake like that would happen.

Here is one all you guys missed. I know, because I have done it.

And by the way, nice post Shawn. Here it is:

When I was younger and stupider, I had a nice fiat 124 spyder which was really a pretty nice little convertable except for the fact that the body was made of compressed rust. Anyway, returning from college with our famous Illinois Toll road system, I slowed from about 65 mph to stop and pay a toll. Doing, I imagine 55 or so, I shift down into FIRST GEAR(!!!!!!!!!!) and let the clutch out way, way, way too early! Ironically, the engine was undamaged, but the inner, splined portion of the clutch friction disc decided to modify itself from what used to be a one piece splined and friction disc into two pieces. The final drive, spinning at say 1,000 rpm, connected to the drive wheels, did not like the engine side grabbing the friction disc portion of the clutch doing 7 or 8 thousand rpm. It was expensive to fix.

OK, I'm a NOOB stick driver. I've YET to mis-shift. BUT...

Shawn --- You mentioned a "good driving" technique can save your ass when you do infact mis-shift. Is it basically being a conscientious (sp?) driver?
