DIY q. cleaning radiator/air condenser coils

cltypeSLOW posted:

everytime i wash my car i spray the radiator/air condenser coils with simple green and let it soak for like 15 mins then rinse and it works wonders....my dads an AC technican and thats all they use to clean coils most of the time....its safe for the environment too :thumb:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174992&highlight=Simple+Green

Anyone got pics of where exactly to spray? I'm not that dense i see the rad coils but where are the ac coils? Also on the back I'm assuming we stay completely away from the two large fans, right?

Pics please.

you are in luck. my bumper is currently off the car for another project. ill get some pics for you tomorrow and post them up. basically, the area inside of the main lower grill inlet and behind the acura symbol is where you want to spray. (its easier to get the area behind the upper grill when the hood is open. simple green wont hurt your car or the paint so you can be very liberal spraying it on the coils/radiator fins.

It looks like one has to take the bumper off to thoroughly get the AC coils cleaned? Otherwise a spritz can be done on the ac coils.

And have to take off the ac coils to get to the radiator coils?

Also i got a crapload of little rocks in the ac coils. Will douching it out with the Simple Green spray loosen any of those? Or does it have to come off the car to get them all out?

AC works a lot easier when the film of crap is removed.

cleaning ac condenser coils improves the efficiency of the system. usually this is done more on commercial or residential units. i see someone doing this on really really old cars that the coils are caked up with crap. and it adds 5 horsepower!

distortedolskool and CleanCL,
What do you estimate time for taking off bumper?

And would you say taking bumper off is a must for doing a decent clean job on the AC coils?

i can pull a CL bumper in 5 minutes =]

nah, i think you might just have to remove the plastic shroud (mine has been long gone), and then you can spray stuff in there. it's kind of hard to spray the radiator and you don't want to get simple green near electrical stuff. so i guess it's really just the condenser.

I am not sure what happened to those pictures but here is another showing the AC condenser in front and the radiator in the rear. This is looking through the front just behind the grille.

Can we spray both AC condenser and the radiator?
Should the water spray only go one direction? (Front grill to firewall direction.) In other words do NOT spray the direction of firewall to front bumper grill?

Me too. I had to change one of the fans out once and decided that was a good time to blast water from the other side. Lots of nasty water and bugs came out.
