Dirt/oil/fuel(?) build up in Intake Manifold

Question for all.
While doing maintance on my Wife's 01 CL-S.
Switched from NGK Plat, to NGK Iridum plugs
flushed coolant.
I , out of curosity opened the top panel on the intake manifold.
(My Wife has been griping about reduced gas milage for the past few months)
I was floored to see a build up of dirt-fuel or oil mixture, baked to a solid blocking most of the passage ways on the underside of the top panel and the front chamber nearest the throttle body.
After two and a half hours of cleaning, it looked like it should be.

My question is this.

What caused this build up???

My guess is the K+N filter. I have had it since the car had 5000miles.
It is now at 141,000.

I know the issues with over oiling the filter, and have always taken care(so I thought) to avoid it.

I also put in a new PCV valve.

Gas milage has pretty much returned to where it should be.
But I can't help thinking about it. If I have solved the problem.

Ha anyone else ever notice the same stuff in their manifold?

Thanks in advance for any advice or help.

Completely normal for this type of car. The CL & TL run rich from the factory. This keeps emssions down & gas milage up. The drawback is the air/fuel doesn't burn all the way & you get engine deposit buildup.
I have owned several different cars that suffered the same thing.
I wish someone would make something to lean out the mix. The car could see some serious gains by leaning it out a little.

Edit, Over oiling the filter isn't a great concern on this car either. There's no MAS sensor to screw up by the extra oil.

A harness from boomslang.com and an E-manage would give you the tuning ability wouldn't it?

EGR system ! (EGR : Exhaust Gas Recirculation)
it can clog it so hard to through a check engine light (don't remember the code now, but descrition is : EGR valve lift insufficient).

needs to be cleaned up along with the passage from intake manifold to EGR valve

Hey i had the same problem, there was so much black sand stuff it was really nasty. but seafoam made it easy to clean it up. also check my thread with outlaw engineering spacers and you will see that my thing is dirty

I didn't open mine up, but I ran some of the Acura Top Engine cleaner through my car the other day. It spit some nasty black smoke out while it was working. The engine has gotten some of the snap I noticed it losing and is much smoother. I guess it will clean alot of the senors and stuff too. It took about 15 mintues to do. I'm definetly going to use this stuff once in a while. I don't know if it works as well as seafoam, but it was really easy.

You'll frown when you see the build up...no fret though...just clean the bad boy out and the J series will run smoother...
