Differences between 01 02 03?

Hey all - I'm a newb here and been looking for CLs for about a week or so.

Pretty much got it down to an
'01 CL w/ nav, silver, w/ 16k mi for around 17.5k
'01 CL-S w/ nav, black, w/ 37k for 17.5k
'02 CL , no nav, black w/ 29k for 18k
Oh yeah, I like black - but silver looks great on some of the CLs on this site.

I hear that the window glass is thicker and you have less rattles in the '02? Is that true?

And the CL Info site says "FOB like the '02 TL" - can anyone clear this up for me?

So what do you guys think? They're all pretty solid.

Lookin to join you all soon

I would go with this one. The differences between 01 and 02 are minimal...different cup holders, different side mirrors...

Get the navi for sure.

Never heard that about the glass before.

white nav with black interior looks the best imo. silver with nav is great as well. 01-02 is so close its ridiculous. 03 is where they really made some changes. all 3 sound great!

I noticed that you had both CL and CL Type-S in your list of possibilites. I'd recommend getting the Type-S no matter which year you choose.

'01 CL-S w/ nav, black, w/ 37k for 17.5k

This one hands down, simply because it's a Type-S.

Thanks, and another ?

Thanks guys for all the help. I've been leaning a Type-S too, and it does seem like it makes a difference.

Anyway, as I'm checking through these again -

anything you guys recommend I check/go through that's special for a CL?

I know some have got transmission issues, and I'm making sure they all have good, oem transmissions.

Rattles I'm checking too. Anything else you guys recommend?

Appreciate the help

If the 03 6 speed is in your budget you really should consider it. You owe it to yourself to at least test drive the 6 speed. Many early CL buyers wish the 6 speed had been available when they bought their 01 or 02 automatics. They made about 2700 6 speeds. Totally different experience.

chungkopi has a point, its all comes down to, how long you think your going to have the car amd how many miles your going drive, as after 100K your on your own for 100% of the Mx cost including the tranny. The CLS is a great car and for the price with all the options included you can't beat it.

This year i bought a 01 CLS with 26K, i love the car, it was fully certified by Acura, so it has a 12month bumper to bumper warranty included. And i'm glad i got it cert too, as i have already had a new ECU installed, mirror, installed. The cost and labour at my Local Acura dealer would of been way over $1000. So you might want to look into that or purchase one for peace of mind, as its a used car. Bought it in march but i'm already over 37K, thats 11000miles in 4months, I dont like the fact that there is a possibily that i will be over 100K, within my Financing (5years), there is not way i'm paying monthly payments on a car i can't even get somekind off warranty for, especially with out the Tranny issue, For the cost of a new tranny + labour, thats nice down payment on a car.

The other thing is i would never recoupe that money back as the TL/CLS have below average resale value for trade in or sometimes private sale, depending on how many miles you are too 100K.

No matter what you do, dont buy a high mileage CL unless you can get a good deal on it.

The bottom line, take your time on deciding if you want one or not, it depends on your driving habits as for as the miles go. All i know is no matter what i do when i go to trade it in or sell it i'm going to be taking a bigger loss then i was led to believe. But for now the plus's are better then negtives, i got a good looking car at a great price, and a very low interest rate thru Honda finance.

Good luck ...........

would seem if you could spend $2,000 more for the navi you would have the means to spend $2,000 more for the s

perhaps not everyone bought a premium because they 'couldn't afford an S'?

Am I interested? Of course! Sounds sweet - 13k miles - that's the best I could ask for.

Tell me what you hear. Thanks!

I think the bowling ball trim on black type S interiors in '01 & '02 was replaced with a faux aluminum trim on the '03. Bowling ball trim (faux ebony) sucked ass & cheapened the whole interior.

seriously...the CL, regardless of trim, is a very nice car. I'm sure most of us would take the type-s over the cl-p, but it all depends on what you're looking for in your car.

also, why is it alot of you dont like the 'bowling ball' trim? Everyone thats come in my ride, including myself, thinks it looks really classy. It's the brown wood that looks terrible in my opinion. I just dont like the brown wood on any car, period (no offense). Moreover, I would definitely rather have the aluminum trim

My personal opinion, buy the CLP with Navi, and then change out the springs/shocks/rims, and you've got a really nice ride. Well, you'll have a nice ride to begin with but getting rid of the heinous 16" stockers and the 4x4 look is crucial. You guys driving S's that think the 4x4 look is bad, you should have seen my P before I put the comptech's in...looked like I could go rock climbing with the clearance I had! I wish my P had Navi, otherwise what I'm saving in insurance each month versus driving an S is enough to compensate for not having an extra 35 hp. Otherwise, the looks are the same...Except for perforated leather & white-faced guages. and 17" rims. But we already covered that.

I agree, the 03 interior trim looks 100x better then the fake wood of the 01 and 02's.

So I CarFaxed my potential cars...and ooh lala guess what I found -

the 01 CL-s? 4 OWNERS in 3 1/2 years??? in fact, owned by a guy in Upland CA (tons of mechanic shops htere :/ ) for just 4 MONTHS and then resold...

another 01 CL-s I was checking out?
Bank Repo at 20k miles...then supposedly driven by the bank as a commercial vehicle for 15k. Would the guy possibly take care of that car? oil changes, garaged, etc. anything??

I think they are glaring 'AVOID's, and i should probably wait for the next batch of CL-S's available in the SoCal area.

What do you all think?

Thanks

you could ebay or hook up with a dealer like CarMax and have them find you one for a small fee...Places like CarMax have access to the inventory across the nation, but there's a fee to have it transported to the nearest dealership. If you've got really big cajones, try to ebay one...just check it out thoroughly before you bid...
