every downward stroke of a 2 cycle engine makes power (and they don't generally have intake/exhaust valves in the typical automotive sense)

every other downward stroke of a 4 cycle makes power

In simple terms, the four events of combustion 1)intake 2)compression/ignition 3)power 4)exhaust, take place in a 2 cycle engine in 2 strokes or cycles of the piston, in a 4 cycle it takes 4 strokes or 4 cycles.
1 cycle = 1 stroke

yeah, and one complete revolution of the crankshaft is 2 strokes for any one piston (for either type of engine)

2-stroke vs 4 stroke

A four stroke has:

1. Intake (pulls air in)
2. Compression (compress air)
3. Power (explosion --> push the crank)
4. Exhaust (push the exhaust out)

A two stoke has only two cycles:

1. It pulls air in and compresses in upstroke.

2. If makes power and exhausts in down stroke.

Here is a link that may help you out:

BTW -- Rotary engines are considered similar to 2-stroke/2-cycle engines...

Also:

Two-cycle -> one power pulse per revolution.

Also, advantages of two-strokes:

(a cleaned-up excerpt)

a) A two-stroke engine has no valves; there is no oil in the engine. 2-4% oil is premixed with the gasoline so that the engine gets the necessary lubrication. The oil burns with the fuel and what's left of the consumed oil comes out through the exhaust-pipe.

b) Two-stroke engines ignites the compressed fuel-air mixture on every second stroke while four-stroke engines needs four strokes to ignite.

c) The two stroke engine can be made smaller, it´s usually lighter and it has less moving parts than a 4 stroke engine
