dialing in suspension for auto-x (?)
dialing in suspension for auto-x (?)
Going Auto-x-ing again this weekend. Going to a brand new race track called Beaver Run north of Pittsburgh.
Had a question about dialing in my coilovers. Some people tell me to have the rear softer than the front while others say it's best to have the rear struts stiffer. So which is best?
I know to run the front tire PSI hirer than the rear (40 front and 35 rear)...which is pretty fun, cause it kicks the rear end out on hard corners.
So, any help would be appreciated. Thanks...

Well...
Well this is just my $.02, but if you have the front stiffer than the rear, I think you are going to get some serious push (understeer if I remmember my terminology correct).
You'll probably want your front setup a little softer than the rears

Although I've only been to two auto-x so far, I talked to the veteran FWD guys and they recommend stiffer in the back, softer in the front for shocks in order to minimize understeer and maximize oversteer (when lifting the throttle in a hard turn or tapping the brakes).
I think you are on the right track with your tire pressure though.
hmmm...i guess that makes sense. thanks for the suggestions.
I was pushing a lot last time I went out auto-xing with the setup I had in my sig.
damn...this means I have to remove the rear seats...what a pain.

I'll second that.

Since this car is designed for understeer, the front wheels already have more pressure on them and will lose traction first. By making the rear stiffer you are transfering some of the load to the back, since it is working only about 50% as hard as the front. You really can't make the front wheels get any more traction because they are pretty much at 100% anyway. By maing the rear stiffer it should reduce understeer somewhat and allow the rear to have more traction.
