DAMN STATE TROOPER!!!!!!!!

I just got a damn freakin speeding ticket today for supposedly doing 90mph in a 70mph. Well I swear I was doing no more than about 75 because I know that there are lots of troops in East Texas I-10. I was pretty much alone East bound towards Louisiana there were no cars for miles in front of me and probably one really far behind me, so you guys know that I wouldn't be stupid enough to speed through with out a detector. Well he was going west on the other side and when he saw me went across the median, I looked down at my Speedo and it was on 75, so I was like he can't pull me over for going 5 miles over on a damn interstate. Well I slowed down some more and he sped up and flashed his lights, fuking a**. Of all the damn days, it was New Years and this is already happening to me. Anyways he called me back to his car, instead of coming up to mine said I was doing 90, I said I didn't and he slapped a ticket on me. To top it off I have to go see a JP in Vidor, TX of all places, and for those who don't know about Vidor, KKK capital of TX IMO, and a Asian guys looking around in Vidor isn't gonna be pretty.

I am seriously looking for a damn detecotor now. Just took defensive driveing in Nov for a ticket in Oct and now this. I was never interest in a detector before but now i amn and i got questions

-what is the difference between like a $200 one and say a valintine 4 or 5 bills?
-what wrong with Cobra,Whistler,or BEL?
-How good are detectors in say detecting a** troopers on a free way as compared to a cop in town
-and what ever input you guys wanna tell me about detectors
-or getting out of having this damn ticket showing up on my record

I have heard that BEL detectors are good. And as for detection on the highway compared to the city, it matters what kind of radar is being used whether it is instant-on or laser or k band. There are more false readings in citys though because of more interference.

I have never heard of a cop calling you to come back to his car, I didn't think cops did that sort of thing.

And I know what you mean about cops pulling you over for bs. I was doing no more than 41 in a 35 one time, but when the cop pulled me over he said I was doing 49. I know I wasn't going that fast because I looked at my speedo right before he pulled me over. Oh well, dealing with cops is a part of driving, you just have to deal with their bs.

I have a lot of asians friends, so I know that the bigotry of cops still rears its ugly head from time to time. It is pretty sad that happens, but not a lot you can do about it.

Good luck with the ticket.

Go to the archives section of either Road & Track or Car & Driver and look for the comparo they did on the radar detectors. It's a little old, but at least you will see objective differences b/n the V1 and the poseurs such as Cobra and Bel (of which I've owned one of each and do not hold a candle to the V1).

If you have a detector, do you have to hide it from the cop if you get pulled over? Or is it 100% legal to have one?

I have had a V1 since Christmas, it has saved my a$$ 3 times. The first time was sweet. I was on a two lane road pretty much going the speed limit with no one in front of me. A BMW 750 comes right up on my ass. Just as I was about to show this guy I wasn't going to hold him up the V1 starts chirping. The tone gets faster and faster. The guy in the BMW is pissed now, along with a few other people behind him. Sure enough from over a hill comes a motorcycle cop in the other direction.
The V1 saw him before I could.
The benifits I have noticed with the V1 are less false alarms, and range.

i know they sucks..specially when they notice u driving a good car..they want to pull u over and give u a ticket anyway..so if there is no other car around u on the highway...obey the speed limit..if yes..then follow the otehr cars' speed..tickets are sucks and expensive and going to ruin your driving record....

Radar detectors are legal everywhere in the US except Virginia and maybe DC. They have since been legalized for non-truck in CT? Canada is a whole difference story where they are mostly outlawed.

Several times the cops have checked my detector's serial number to see if it had been removed; once they called it in. They have no problem with you having and using the device. The cops don't think they work anyway (they're always telling me about instant on and how it defeats my detector).

No radar detector can save you from a cop with radar when he says you were speeding when you weren't. That seems to be the problem here. That would make me mad, especially if I knew the cop was ahead, I slow down miles back, and he still pulls me over.

Were you ever speeding, going 90? Perhaps you were clocked way back before you ever saw DPS. w/o a radar detector you won't know when you were actually clocked. Chances are when you looked down at your speedo, your pulse had long since been taken. Get a good radar detector.

BTW, I've been in the front seat of the patrol car twice before. It's not unusual since it's so dangerous standing around on the highway. A trooper will do this if the traffic violation is minor and you have two people in your car.

Hey Fab, why don't you tell us how you really feel about Texas?

I grew up in San Antonio, it wasn't so bad, parts of TX are all different. Can't say much good about Louisiana but if I lived in NoCal, I would probably concur with your sentiments!

Ken,
I do love Austin, San Antonio and South West Texas, but the rest is history.....Louisiana is a crazy place too ! My parents own and run a very successful restaurant in Cajun country, but that is unique place in the US.... I'll stay in California !

Sorry 'bout the ticket. There's an old expression, "Don't Mess With Texas". Having lived in San Antonio previously, I can attest to that

Escort 8500 gets top marks from everyone and is $300. I love my V1 ($400). Both are investments well made, IMHO. Especially if you like to drive....um, "enthutiastically" (like me)

Yet another positive comment from Mr. Ken
A radar detector won't help if a cop says you were speeding when you weren't... No shit.
I read that part..... I also read the part where he was asking about radar detector's..... which is what I was responding to.
I have a co-worker that got a ticket for speeding when he wasn't. He was in a rental car with navi. He was able to get a print out from the navi company that proved he wasn't speeding via the GPS.

Thanks for the info on the detectors guys and gals. I see we have lots of advocates for the V1, I use to not have to worry about this kind of shit when I had Road Travel Plan that will pay my lawyer fee, to get my ticket dismissed for a small monthly fee, I canceled it because it been 2 years since it first helped me and now i wish I still had the damn insurance.

BTW, I really was only going the speed limit because I was pretty much alone on my side of the free way and He was not parked.

I was wondering can you get clocked from a moving vehicle, i always thought that the cop had to be parked or not moving to get an accurate read. He was at least going the speed limit of 70 in the oposite direction, does that make my reading jump up to say 140mph if i was going 70 in the oposite direction?

Most State Troopers use what is called “Moving RADAR” which is tied into the speedo of the car and compensates for the “closing speed” of the two cars.
They can clock you from a standstill, moving opposite directions or from behind.
