dad's opinion vs. son's

my dad i sure that it is better to run my 01 cl-s 5 spd auto in 4th gear unless going over 70 i just say leave it in 5th all the time becuase the rpms will be lower therefore lees work on the engine and less wasting of expensive ass gas and he says leaving it in 5th all the time is not good for it or something

just wondering what some other people thought

i agree w/ your dad. 5th gear sucks unless you're going 70.

D-5 is a no brainer. It makes for a more economic car. With very few exceptions mine is always in D-5.

D4 if you want performance, D5 if you want economy and a longer lasting car. Simple as that.

:squinteek:Its still going to kick down to the same gear if its in 4th or 5th on an automatic. If you want to drive in a higher rpm then go into sport shift. Otherwise it doesnt really make a difference unless your going to go faster than 4th gear will allow

I keep it in D4 in the city because I can't stand the 5th gear trying to engage, along with the torque converter locking and unlocking. That's just unnecessary.

trust me you do not want your car in D5 (a.k.a. Overdrive) and scooting around town luggin the motor, downshift after downshift with every little hill you come across..

Daddy knows best...

Same for me d4 city, d5 only above 55-60. Old lesson learned from owning GM and Ford 4 spd OD cars! Now it is a habit. I've noticed that if I forget to downshift from D5 after exiting the freeway, when I stop and start again the trans doesnt feel as responsive on each shift. It also wants to lock the coverter much too soon and lug the motor if I'm accelerating slowly.

Is it OK to use D2 going down long hills (30 mph speed limit)? I do this in my truck all the time, but with the trans probs in our cars....

Our transmissions have the Grade Logic feature. It'll lock the gear in and do engine braking by itself if the PCM thinks it's necessary.

D5 for better gas mileage... unless you're racing around, no sense in putting extra wear and tear on the engine and tranny... but heck, I'm probably close to your dad's age...

^I also said unless you want to drive in a higher rpm you would use 4th.So you qouted part of what I said and then said the same thing in different way? Why?

Just because you drive in 5th gear doesnt mean your cars going to always shift to it.D5 is for normal driving. The transmission will use the appropriate gear. driving in 4 just puts you in a higher rpm range.(harder on your engine) wheter your in 4th or 5th when you take off you still take off in first. And when your in 5th or 4th its still going to kickdown the the gear you need to get on down the road fast. 5th gear is for normal driving Its in the manual, show it to your dad.

Uhmm... at 60 you are going to be higher than you need to be. His dad said use 4th up to 70 that is just an engine and mileage killer for no need. Around town who cares as you normally wont shift into fifth anyway.

^ I agree thats what Im saying 95 gt youre still going to get performance in fifth gear though. No need in driving around 4th @4000 rpm or what ever when you can be in 5th @2500 and downshift

I use SS 98 % of the time, but . I think either in Chods FAQ, or somewhere on here, someone did a test of D4 gas mileage vs. D5 gas mileage, and the difference was not that great.
I agree with dad though, alot less work on the tranny to leave in D4 in the city, but I'm all for D5 on the Hwy.
