I use SS now. But I used to use auto and found that D4 on everything but the freeway worked best. I never used 5th gear in my previous cars on the street, so why should I let the auto use it? 5th is just too tall to bother with under 60mph.

Using D4 turns it into a 4 speed auto. It never uses 5th. You'll get slightly worse mileage using D4 on city streets. But it saves wear on the transmission. Because in D5 it would want to be in 5th gear at 48mph and the revs would be under 1500. There's no power at that speed so you'd be downshifting everytime you needed to accelerate a little.

I use SS about 50% of the time, but when I'm not, I use D5. I don't have any reason, 'cause I'm not that technical of a person, but it certainly seems to make sense to me. I'd like to utilize all my gears and not limit my tranny in it's ability to do what it needs to.

I never go D5 on surface roads. I only go D5 after reaching freeway cruise speeds (75-80)
