Cracked Windshield

So my windshield recently got a crack, it's about a foot long on the passenger side. Because of the length of the crack I'm pretty sure I'll need it replaced. I've read almost every thread on the topic here and now am deciding what to do. There are so many threads on the topic and so much advice from members (something I love about this board), but at the same time since there are so many points of view its hard to get a consensus. My comprehensive insurance deductible is $500 and basically here's my options:

1. Go through my insurance and pay $500 deductible and make sure they use OEM Acura windshield and moldings.

or

2. Go to one of those glass replacement places, some of the ones in Los Angeles are Safelite, All Star Glass, etc. These places will charge about $250 for replacing the windshield but the part is after market and not OEM.

I would greatly appreciate any advice from this board if any of you have had a similar situation. Basically I want to know if I should pay the extra $250 or so to go through insurance and get OEM (my insurance agent says it won't affect my premiums either)

Thanks!

I suppose you missed the threads that explained that there truly isn't such a thing as "OEM" glass. Acura is not in the glass business. They don't make their own windshields, windows, etc.

PPG is the largest supplier of "OEM" glass to auto manufacturers in the county. The major nationwide shops will all use PPG glass and I had my windshield replaced for $190 a few years back when I had a crack. It will have the same thickness and other tolerances as your original glass, it just won't say Acura or Honda on it.

You should check with your insurance company to see if your policy offers zero-deductible glass replacement. Many states require this.

Hope this saved you some trouble.

Thanks for the info mrsteve. I'm going to go through All Star Glass which uses PPG glass. Unfortunately CA insurance doesn't cover it, but the price is only $225 installed. This board rocks!

A windshield replacement for most any car is under $300.

Just in case someone near my location needs the info, through some acquaintances,we can get windshields installed for less than $200. However, I need to know what type of vehicle (year, model, etc) so I can ask...
