If you are going to buy a CL soon, you won't need to know.

- Either go to neutral and hold down the brake or stay in first and keep the clutch down. It's better to go into neutral.
- yes. Neutral is in the middle. Where the gear can move around freely.
- You switch at different RPMs depending on the car. You don't redline during regular driving.

My Suggestion: Rather than explaining how to drive stick, which is much like typing instructions on how to walk, rent or borrow a stick shift car and do whatever comes to mind to make it move....feel out the car, and if you have some sense of co-ordination, you will drive smoothly in 20 minutes..

I have to add one more thing, although it might seem like a good idea to have a person in the car with you to instruct you on the basics, it'll only piss you off more when you continue to stall over n over. I recently came into having a beater car to drive 100 miles a day from home to work n back, and it's a stick. After many errors and stalls with trying to learn with several friends, I got the hang of it on my own.
So rent a car, drive it for a couple days, and you'll get it down to where you don't even think about it. U'll automatically downshift when a stoplight's approaching, you'll know which gear to be in when approaching parking lots and such, etc. As for de-pressing (lifting your foot off the clutch) during initial drive off, I just give the gas pedal a little nudge as I'm letting off the clutch, slowly, and it'll get going. Pretty soon you'll also learn how to keep it steady on an incline so you don't hit the person in back of you as you're takin off. Trial n error, my friend, trial n error. I will say this though, it's helluva lot of fun!! I'm still not tired of driving stick yet!!!

I mean this is amazing. Many many years ago every car was stick. Both off the column or on the floor. How did all those folks learn how to drive, not by renting.
You young guys are making driving a stick seem like one needs the skills and talents of an underwater demolition team in Tokyo harbor around 1942.
I dont care about getting flamed but a stick (after 5 minutes at least) is the easiest thing in the world. And if you stall, and you will at first, then don't worry about who is behind you. Because you'll only stall when your stopped already.
Good Luck and just DO IT!

By the time you can rent a car legally, you probably already know how to drive a stick. Millions and millions of people (including me) learned to drive a stick on a non-rental person. It just isn't worth it to spend $30-$40 (rent car, under age fees, gasoline) to learn to drive a stick and those who do this and learn later will probably spread the word to "save your money and don't do something stupid like I did...." effectively killing the idea and saving the rental car companies a sh*tloads of teenagers decending on their premises looking for 5-sp manuals to rent for practice. :p
Ok, I'm j/k. Hertz probably doesn't offer sticks because they know everybody can drive an auto but everybody can't drive a stick. Why have them? They're not that much cheaper [to buy] these days anymore but their resale value is certainly a lot less still.
