Comptech Drop in Air filter worth $50?
Comptech Drop in Air filter worth $50?
I was just wondering if it is at all worth $50 for the air filter if I really don't plan on modding out my car much. Thoughts? Any noticible gains at all?

i have the K&N drop in and took out the stock resonator box and ran a custom tubing to the front intake. not as loud as a true CAI but still louder and sounds better than stock. also improved mpg and some throttle responce by may be a little.
I have one.... Not sure about gains because I put it in right away, I think it IS worth the money because you don't have to replace it, just wash it out. So, any additional MPG (I really doubt any HP gains) would just be a benefit. I'm thinking of upgrading to a CAI, so that would mean that I would sell mine, cheap, it which case it would be worth in for sure. E-mail me if you would be interested, or check in Black Market every so often, as I will post in there when I decide to sell.
I have the Comptech hi-flow filter and if you remove the resonator it's definitely worth it. I have the same setup as NOVAWhiteTypeS (we did our work together) and with the hi-flow filter and removed resonator you're getting maybe 2hp gains but the real benefit is it sounds a little better than stock and your car is breathing easier.

There are no cons to removing the resonator.
Difficulty depends. How good are you with automotive things?
It's too many steps for me to detail them now, but basically you gotta jack up the front driver's side and undo the plastic splashguard in the front. You gotta pop the hood and undo all the bolts that hold in the resonator (the one down by the battery needs a really long socket extension to reach (around 8-9") or just take out the battery.
You're going to d/c and re/connect the battery after you're done anyway, so it's not a big deal. Although you will need your radio code handy.
You gotta loosen the stock airbox and maybe even pull it part-way out so you can separate it from the resonator box more easily. It's really not that hard to do.
All-in-all it's a good two hour project with a friend or two. Three of us got together and did two cars in about ... 3 hours was it?
You spend a whole $10 (or less) at Home Depot for some 3" flexible aluminum tubing and some wire mesh to cover the open end and a pipe clamp to hold it to the tube.
Definitely a fun mod, and you don't have to deal with getting under your car to wash/replace the filter like you do with a real CAI. :P
I think Joe might have written a FAQ about how to do it but I'm not sure.

That's bullshit. I noticed no loss of power with it removed. I could chirp tires just as easy with it removed. Whatever loss of power there might be is easily negated by the increased flow and easier breathing of the car.
I was able to chirp second gear with my intake - some people can't even do that with a completely stock car.
But hey it's up to you. I know it's better with it removed and replaced with a tube and hi-flow filter, but if you don't want to risk it, don't.
