coilovers or not?

i have about 4500 miles on my 2003 6sp now and i fricking love this car. my next mod will be the CAI but now i dont know if coilovers are worth the money in regards to lowering this car. i dont want to lose the feel of the ride but i want better handling. I will add the sways (upper and lower) soon as well. So are coilovers really worthy of the money and will I lose the ride quality?? Damn i cant seem to find the proper 18x8 rims that doesnt cost a fortune.

Chong,

I had this debate for quite a while myself. When it came down to it, I decided to get the TEIN SS coilovers. Here are my reasons why:

1) adjustable height - I live in a city where the roads are horrible and it snows quite a bit in the Winter. Plus I'm getting wheels soon so I want to be able to adjust the wheel/fender gap.

2) adjustable struts - I wanted to keep the ride feeling like stock, and have the option to change the stiffness when I autox.

3) quality - the TEIN's are very well known throughout the import scene and I have only heard good things about them. I was very skeptical about the newer brands and I figured I'd rather pay the extra for coilovers that will last longer and have been time tested.

hope that helps,

and I'm w/ you about finding a good 18X8...I wish I lived in Japan.

Step 1 - Comptech sway bars
Step 2 - Better tires and/or new wheels&tires
Step 3 - Coilovers or sport springs.

There are LOTS of stylish wheels at the place where I got mine from.
He imports right from Japan and can get stuff no one else has.

You'll need a camber kit only if you drop the car REALLy low. ie: over 1.75-2.00 inches.

I plan on doing a 1.25-1.5 inch drop so I should be ok.

Ask JRock about the camber kits, or do a search. I think he recently got a set.

Always remember to get an alignment after doing any suspension mods though.

i installed the apexi ws damper/coilover & dropped 2" all around. i don't feel any change in the ride comfort but the handling improved tremendously.

i'll be installing camber kits as my reading are about 2 degrees negative. i went with adjustables cuz i'm planning to change my stock wheels (17" or 18", probably even 19" - depending on the budget) and wanted to be able to adjust the height accordingly.

Everyone's CLS seems to have different camber, even on identical drops. At least that's what they claim.

My car needs camber kits pretty bad (I'm having them installed tomorrow evening) with my 2.5" drop.

I'm also raising almost an inch for several reasons, none of which are problems, all of which are just future-proofing (I don't know where I'll be living by the end of this summer - going into armed forces, and I don't want the hassle/headache of finding someone to mess with my coilovers after I move so I want everything set safely while I still have a good tech friend close by to do it).

I'll let you know how the camber kit installs and subsequent alignment go.

Congrats and welcome. From what you say, i think the setup i have would be perfect. Comptech springs, sways and Koni yellows. The handling is incredibly better and the ride quality is just right. All of the above is probably cheaper than the better coilovers imho. Good luck.

Dunno bout that..... Let's just use ACP as the price basis..

Comptech Springs = 275 + 25 shipping
Koni Yellows = (280 X 2) + 26

Comes out to about 880 dollars....

The coilover setup (Apex'i and TEIN) are 870 and (when they were still available throught ACP) I think 1050?

the drawback to the Apexi is there is no setting for the ride dampening, but I've riden on these and they are a tad bit harder than the Comptechs.... Remember that the coilover setup means the shock and spring are designed with each other in mind, with Koni yellows, ur still mixin' and matchin.
