CLS 6MT vs. 3.5 TL 5AT

Everybody on here knows Austin's got the low compression 3.5 upgrade and every goodie known to man on his car already.

As for myself I have a 6 speed CLS with the following
Injen CAI
S03s 225/45/17
Eibach Sways
CT Springs

We had a great day running around the twisties out by Lake Travis in Austin near the Volente area. Fun stuff. A lot of 20 mph turns made at 65+. For those of you that were late or missed it, you really missed out.

Then we finally crept over to 360 for a little heads up light to light action.

From a dig it was my tires that gave me the advantage. I got great launches though some of our launches were a huge surprise b/c the lights changed from red to green so quickly and without notice. Keep in mind also that Austin is still running stock shitty ass tires as well as low compression. Those wins were to be mine no matter what. My launch would leap me about 1/4 to 1/2 car ahead and once I hit 2nd and 3rd gear I'd get about 1 more car length. At 4th it was basically a dead stop. nothing really impressive between the two of us after that.

Though we had some trobule getting a good bit of pavement without running into other traffic, we got a couple good runs from a roll. When first trying it the roads were a bit curvy so we called it quits. Then finally some room opened up ahead of us and we both slowd to about 40. The traffic behind us on 360 trying to go home from late work were PISSEd and honking. But who cares right? f* them.

It was dead even from a roll. If there were any gains on anyone it was Austin on me. I was quite impressed with the 3.5L upgrade keeping in mind that it was on low compression at 10:14:1 . I can only imagine what the 10.8:1 compression would do.

This is probaly the last time i'll be able to keep up with austin since his S/C will be in soon.

Nice runs civic.

Do you happen to know how much boost can you run with CR at 10.14:1? Is Austin using a stock 5AT tranny?

The 10.8:1 CR would have about 0.66% more power. As a general rule of thumb you gain about 1% power increase for a 1.0 point jump in CR. Let's assume the 3.5L upgrade is making about 240 WHP; this difference in compression would equate to about 1.6 WHP. In other words, nothing incredibly significant. So don't try to imagine what the higher CR would be like, it wouldn't be noticeable.

Also, the 10.14:1 CR is still high in terms of a street vehicle. It is just slightly lower than our stock 10.5:1 CR and higher than the CL-P/TL-P at 9.8:1. Most factory forced induction vehicles run a CR of about 8.5:1; that is significantly lower. The lower CR of 10.14:1 will allow for a little more boost before the onset of detonation. More boost is better than more CR as there is more O2 to work with.

I am sure he has more WHP than you by about 20 WHP at the least. The deciding factor was the slight weight difference but mainly gearing. You were in 4th and he was probably in 3rd which is about the same gearing. So everything make sense.

On 93 octane you could run about 8 PSI on the 10.14:1 CR. On the 10.8:1 CR you could run about 6.5 - 7 PSI max. Both these are based on non-intercooler boost.

darrinb - no bullshit here... several board members saw this race. ask ktown378 or Hiren. I think Hiren may have gotten a video of the race. I know he got videos of some of our earlier runs down the twisties near lake Travis. Ktown378 saw all the races down 360. He was right behind us the whole time. sorry not bullshit.

I do'nt think so darrin... he's the one Dean has been talking about. Supposedly TypeR's was being done by an Acura Dealership out in FL. Velocity Resources did Austin519's. He's on a-world as a mod there. Austin does a lot of goup buys on aworld too I think. He lives down the street from me.

so i'm guessing that typer's car is quicker than austins, cause i have no doubt that type R would walk a 6 speed w/ intake, but i give ya props, how do those s-03's compare to toyo t1's

the S03s are great... no more squealing through 1st gear and chirp in 2nd is minimal.

Walk a 6 speed with intake? Remember that Silverstreak
(dave) over there at bimmerforums.com ran a 14.2 with his wife's stock CLS 6 speed. Stock EVERYTHING. It's doable. Not saying I run anything close to as Godly as him but it's definitely a race worth trying.

Anyways darrin street racing is diff than track racing. A bad launch, more uneven pavement, and a lot of other factors come into play. I don't think it'd necessarily be an automatic loss if I went up against TypeR's 3.5L.

I think typeR would walk you and any stock CLS6 or even with intake. He runs high 13s consistently, although I admit I'm not sure if he uses DRs or not. either way I think with some S03s and his SLs he should still be in the high 13s.

It would be interesting to know what Austin's car does in the quarter right now.

maybe someday we'll see... put a set of headers in the mix and you've got that auto 3.5L beat.

civic4982, you might have Austin beat, but it sounds like typeR's 3.5 is a different beast. no doubt the CLS6 is a fast car stock but headers alone probably won't get you in the 13s...definitely not 13.7. isn't the fastest CLS6 with headers a 13.9 from allmotor before he started doing all this other stuff? Let me know when you get the headers and you run the quarter in under 14. Not flaming or anything just stating my observations since being on this board.

Does anyone think 13.9 is possible on a 6 speed with I/H/E on a cool day? I think it's possible or at least i'd like to think so.

13.9 is fastest on the board, we should be sure ot make that distinction... also, do remember that a 14.2 is possible in stock form. that's stock everything from hood to tires. we'll see what my sorry driving can do on the track when I get headers.

I have no doubt that TypeR's car is fast. But put the right driver in the seat of a manual and the results could be surprising.

Don't worry Scalbert, there aren't too many of those drivers.

very, very few people can get a 14.2 from a stock CLS6. Name me two people on this board. Also, allmotor and silverstreak (from the BMW forum) drag race on a regular basis and dare I say are probably in a league of their own. your 14.5 is no doubt impressive especially in the heat. Good Luck and keep us in the loop as to when you get the headers and icebox.

Now that the weather is cool and I have some mods I hope to get closer to your 14.5....big jump from a 15.2. My guess is I can get a 14.7, maybe a 14.6 at best! Always looking to get better also!
