Climate Control problems

I have a late-build 01 CLS, and I'm having troubles with the climate control system. When I set the temperature to 74 (full auto), the system won't keep the temperature even close to that. This is what normally happens: The temperature in the cabin warms up to about 74, and then seems to shut down. I can turn the temp knob up as high as 89, but it won't warm the cabin up.

I took it to the dealer, and they told me that they ran all of the diagnostics and self tests on it, and it works just as it should.

My dad has a 01 Accord EX-V6 (virtually same climate control system) and his holds the temperature that you set very well.

Should I try taking my car to another dealer? Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks for the help.

What is the outside temperature reading on the dash display when you're doing this? I think I read somewhere that the climate control will not go above or below (depending on if you're using AC or heat) the displayed outside temperature......

The outside temp has been anywhere between 10 degrees F and 45 degrees F, lately.

In Full Auto mode, it should "seem to shut down", but only until the hysteresis has been exceeded, then it should come back on. Just like your home thermostat.

It should certainly be able to meet 74 degrees; it is using heat off the exhaust manifold. If it was really cold outside, it should just run all the time. It should always attempt to get inside the hysteresis window set in the programming.

Take it to the dealer again and ask them how their thermostat at home works. If they still dismiss you, get in a car on the lot and try it.

Wow, someone else who knows what hysteresis means!! I can force the system to turn back on by turning the temp up to 90(it runs full blast), but even at 89, the system should detect (within just a minute or two) that it is too cold in the car, and start heating up. Well, I guess I'll try beating the dealer over the head again.

what, exactly, is the 'it' to which you refer (using the heat off the exhaust manifold)?

if you're talking about the heater, it uses hot engine coolant to warm the car, not the exhaust manifold.

Go buy a cheap temp. guage. Set it in the car, run the a/c and check the temp. against the temp gauge you bought and compare ! That's what I do to check the accuracy of it !

"It" would be the Heating System. You are correct about the coolant; I was thinking about old VW Beetles.

Regardless, the coolant should reach a temperature high enough to warm the car to 74 degrees F.

Now, it could be the thermostat. If the thermostat malfunctions, you will get little, if any heat from your system.

Does the sun sensor over ride the internal temp gauge? Are you testing this in bright sun light?

true... air-cooled motors generally wouldn't have any hot coolant to run through a heater coil if they had 'em.

so, does this mean the old air-cooled 911s (and 912s, 914s, 356s, etc.) used manifold heaters as well?

my ac doesnt seem to work at all. I have to turn the fan all the way up to feel cold air. I stoped messing with it already. Just roll down the windows, stay about 70mph, get a nice breeze of wind, natural ac i guess.
