mclarenf3387 or GreenMachine should be able to answer your questions... They are both CLP owners...

While you're waiting for some answers, you can read this:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182010

EDIT: the intake is different, but the compression ratio of the motor is different too IIRC... 10.5/1 for the CLS vs. 9.8/1 for the CLP

Type S models have larger diameter piping (3") throughout the car,
their vtec engages at 4800rpm, whereas ours engages at 5500,
they also have vehicle stability assist instead of traction control
and their exhaust system flows better than ours

there are some other differences too that i'm forgetting

Thanks big guy.

Compression as said is different even though the engines are the same size. The biggest difference I see for the motors are the Intake manifolds. Here's why...

CL-P = VTEC engages at 5600 RPMS
CL-S = VTEC engages at 4800 RPMS (the IRMC, bypass valve actuator opens the secondary plenum to let more air in from 3800 RPMS) This is where the CL-S sees a jump in HP compared to the CL-P.

The exhaust on the CL-S is slightly larger than the CL-P.

The CL-S has 17" rims, CL-P has 16" rims.

Some of the internals in the engine help crank out a higher compression on the CL-S that the CL-P doesn't have.

My CL-P now has just a tad more power than a stock CL-S. I'm putting on the CL-S IM and throttle body to get a little bit more power. When it gets S/C'ed and Juiced I should be able to run with other CL-S's with the same setup.

If you want a list of things to buy to get you started...here's what I have.

AEM CAI
Megan Headers
Custom Axle Back
UR lightweight underdrive crank pulley
UniChip...bought it from a member with maps already installed for a low price and was never used. I don't reccommend buying a new chip because it's a waste. Look around on AZine's black market.

That's what I have for the engine...I have a lot more installed thoughout my car. And I have the CL-S IM coming...I just need the CL-S throttle body, the bypass valve actuator, and a MSD RPM engagement chip for the actuator. This mod will be complete soon.

Do some searching under my name and mclarens name and you will find plenty of info to help you out.

stiffer suspension as well
preforated leather seats
black on white guage cluster (reverse of the CL P)
road lamps on the 01-02 models

I like the 30HP gain that headers give you for the CL type S

I didnt know CL-Ps ran that low of a compression. Does that mean you can run standard gas?

If you can thats awesome! but I guess Id still rather have the added +35 hp!!

Type-S has domed pistons which increase compression to 10.5 vs. the 9.8 for the base model.
The upper intake manifold is different and freer flowing.
The TB is larger on the Type-S (.25" I believe).
Type-S has a slightly freer flowing exhaust system.
The Type-S has larger intake ports in the head.
The Type-S has a different exhaust cam profile (longer duration I think).
The Type-S has spun cast cylinder walls.

Those are the engine differences that I can think of off the top of my head.

I'll do a full write up on the differences one of these days now that I have time.

i run 87 octane in my CLS. no problems. we have a knock sensor so timing is retarded when you run lower grade fuel.

ive ran 93 for about 2 months before and i saw a very minimal improvement in MPG...no performance was felt by teh butt dyno. i decided to just stick to the 87 here cause it seems to work just fine.

It clearly states in the owners manual to use high octane fuel. But whatever floats your boat I guess!

no prob's here using 87 octane either, maybe 1-3 mpg difference that's all, but i think its mostly cuz when i did 93 i was easier on the gas cuz i payed so much for it. still get between 23-26 mpg avg with 87 w/ no noticeable knocking or performance loss
