CL type S break in

I bought the new Acura CL type S. I must say a wonderful car. The owner's manual recommends for the break in: avoid hard acceleration and hard breaking for the first 600 mls. Since I drive 70 mls on the highway and with 2000 rpm, I figure this should work out fine. (correct me if I'm wrong). But my gas mileage seems to be lower than Acura advertises. (30 mpg vs the 22 I'm driving) I now have 350 mls on it. Does the mileage improve???? Do I break in the car correct???

thanks for any response.

Yes, your mileage should improve. To what I don't know - I never check mine! Just keep the RPMs below 4000 & don't keep a steady speed for any length of time(more than 10-15 minutes) for the recommended 600 miles.

After 12,000 miles the gas milage is only about 22mpg for me. And thats when I'm trying to drive conservatively. Don't expect much in the way of improved gas milage. Even when "trying" to drive the car conservatively. The milage "ain't" that great.

Good Luck

Some members get over 30 mpg on the road. I've done right at 30 mpg going about 80 on the interstate. All cars suck in city driving. I get about 16-17 which is better than a lot of cars. The problem is most folks drive the CL hard. Keeping it in auto mode is not as fun much as the manual mode and really kills our mileage.

I had a 99TL getting an average of 25 MPG. I expected my cls to get as much if not more because of the 5 speed. I got about 23.5 MPG combined. I drive in massachusetts and I got it in december.

Since break in I have averaged about 24.5 - 25. On an extended trip I get about 28 on the highway with cruise on doing about 60-65.

This is something that annoys me, not the poster, but the dealerships. When I went to test drive the CL-S the dealer drove me first and whipped around a corner at 60 in 3rd at over 4000rpm. Then he let me test drive it and I took it a little easier, I noticed the mileage was 83 miles.

So when I go to buy my car, how do I know it wasn't abused during test drives? The only way I can think of is to order one and be there when it comes off the truck.

Mine had 23 miles on it. 11 miles initially, but since the windows needed to be tinted, the dealer drove it to a shop. That put the other 12 miles on it. Don't get a car with more than this on it.

Yeah, try to get one that hasn't been driven, I got mine with 7 miles on it and it wasn't special ordered by me at all. Just make sure you let the dealer know you want one with less than 10 miles on it.

And as for gas consumption, it really depends on the way you drive and the conditions you drive in. Many people claim to be getting about 25 mpg which I can't even get close too; I get about 16 mpg. I did break my car in properly, but the low mpg figures are probably due to the fact that I mostly drive to and from work in traffic, about 30 miles each way.

When I went with my fiance last fall to buy her new car I had the salesman write in the contract that the car would not have more then 10 miles on it at delivery. I understand that it will have some miles on it, but I specifically told them I would not take delivery if it had more then 10.....
