CL-S Wrecked

I'm so blue. Some fool decided to ram into the rear passenger side of my car. Everyone was ok. My car and his car are not however.

An interesting thing happened during the wreck I thought everyone would like to know. I had a spoiler on the back. It came complete off the passenger side and one bolt/screw stayed on the driver side. Needless to say it broke the back window and came into the car and ended up about 6 inches from my head at the end of the accident. I was driving by the way. No one was in the car with me, but I feel if anyone was in the back passenger seat they would be decapitated right now. VERY SCARY! Never getting one of those on a car I own again for this reason.

Any one have this experience besides me?

I'll post pix when they come in from being processed.

L8R,
Jay-man

Sorry to hear that Jay-man. Well, as long as you and everyone involved are ok. I also have a spoiler and it's a scary thought that the spoiler could detach like that. Possibly a design flaw? Anyways, glad that you and everyone are ok.

The spoiler thing is really hard to imagine, I am thinking about getting one, but now i want to think some more. Can you get pictures of that? Because that would definetly be a very big design flaw.

Wow. First off, glad to hear your o.k. That is truely a scary story about the spoiler. I had one on my Accord, but after reading this, no way am I getting one for the CLS.

Take care fellow Acura brother. Cars can be fixed, or replaced. You can't!

Jim

The guy was coming from behind. Kind of like a frontal offset crash except for on rear passenger. The Front and side airbags did not deploy. I was totally stopped. My front seat absorbed most of the impact and is tilted back to 45 degrees and skeewed to the passenger side. I think the car is totalled. Haven't heard yet or not. I will get a new car either way. Just don't know if I will get another CLS. I'll check on the pix today. Maybe this afternoon or tonight I will have them posted.

Thanks for the support everyone.

jay-man,

Sorry to hear about your car . I am glad to hear that you are ok. Have you been to a doctor to get checked out yet? The reason I ask is because I got rear ended one time & thought I was fine. About a two weeks later I started having shooting pains in my neck & lower back. It got so bad that at one point that I could not walk because of my back.

BTW: My accident was not nearly as bad as yours.

Go get checked out, even if you feel like you are OK. Sometimes injuries don't always appear right away. Good luck with everything & I hope everything works out .

The side air bag on the passenger side shouldn't have gone off as the sensors would have detected the absence of a passenger. That's the theory anyway. The spoiler coming off makes me glad I didn't get one. There was a picture of an RSX that got hit the same way you did and the spoiler broke lose on one side and pivoted toward the back window but didn't break it.

Bummer, but glad you're ok. SFLA, is right. My wife was in an accident but it took a couple of days for the injuries to manifest.

Was it a factory spoiler? Are they really heavy enough to cause an injury? They seemed like plastic to me.

I am going to doctor tomorrow. My back is still sore and pops when I move sometimes. I'll get the x-rays and all that good stuff.

Yes, it was a factory spoiler installed by the dealer. There are only four screws/bolts holding it on anyway. I think it would weigh enough to take someones head of in that situation. Also, it didn't break the spoiler at all. I think the screws/bolts are what broke. I'll go to the collision center and look at it some more.

I've heard from nurses and doctors that even sunvisors will stick in the forehead in an accident. I've never seen or experienced this, but I could see it being true.

Jay man, sorry to hear about this. My condolences go out to you. I got rear ended this past thursday and the car is okay, but will need a lot of repair work. Hope everything works out for you.

Check it out.

My previous car. Just for fun.

I hope you can tell abut the spoiler. It just sheared off at the base and the bolts stayed on the trunk lid.

jay-man,

The damage looks very high up. Where you hit by a SUV or truck?

That sucks, You know I bet your insurance will not want to total the car. They always try to repair new cars because it is cheaper than replacing them. I think the rule is that the damage must be more than 75% the value of the car (or some bull sh*t like that). The only way that they must total it is if the car has frame damage. For your sake I hope it does. If they repair it, the car will never be the same.

Damn, from your first post the damage didn't sound as bad as it is. After looking at the pics I can see how the spoiler ended up inside the car. There's no question that your car is totaled. From the pics of CL's and TL's that have been in serious accidents they really do hold up well and do a good job of protecting their occupants.

hit by an s-10 pickup.

I hope the guys insurance doesn't try to fix it. either way I'm getting rid of it. I'm going Toyota Sequoia this time. I don't think I will live through too many crashes in sports cars.

Have you looked at the MDX? I have one and it is incredibly well made and as fun to drive as an SUV can be. If you need the third row of seats in the Sequoia you have to get the old tool kit out to remove/install them which is a pain. MDXs are tough to get (waiting lists) and not cheap (MSRP+). Who knows, maybe the dealer will feel sorry for you caus' of what happen to your CL.

Yep. Gonna look at a MDX. It'll have to be a lot of car though. The Sequoia has it on size and engine. Plus price. I'm looking for a tank this time. My friends and family suggested a hummer. That would actually be nice. Alas, I can't afford one right now.

From a safety perspective the MDX has already had some serious real life experiences that have been shared on acuramdx.org. An MDX stopped at a light got rear-ended by a Ford 900 dump truck going 40MPH. The impact didn't even push the body in to where the third row seat back is positioned. Another MDX rear-ended a Cadillac at 40MPH without slowing down. No injury to driver or passenger. A third MDX ran down a 40-foot deep drainage ditch at 70MPH when the driver fell asleep and didn't roll allowing the driver to regain control. Everyone is waiting for it to be crash tested by the NHTSA and/or the IIHS to find out how it's rated, but so far it's proven itself in some serious real life accidents.

Also, while the Sequoia is more powerful it weighs a 1K pounds more than the MDX. Here's the stats:

HP/Trq - MPG - 0-60/Qtr

Sequoia - 240/315 - 14/17 - 9.1/16.8
MDX - 240/246 - 17/23 - 8.4/16.6

However, if you need to seriously tow or are in to heavy off-roading the MDX is definitely not for you.
