CL-S RIMS VS. TL-S RIMS

I was at the dealer yesterday and noticed something the rims on a tl-s are 17x6.5 and on the cl-s as we all know are 17x7. Did anyone else notice this and I wonder if it really makes any difference.

it does make a slight difference when it comes to putting on new tires. obviously since the TL-S has the same exact tires as the CL-S (215/50R17's), the difference is very small. the offset may vary slightly. i think Tire Rack has some good info on it. as a side note, the TL-S wheel design is just a tiny bit different than the CL-S wheels. and if u think i'm nuts, get the best closeup on both rims and compare. u'll c it, but u have to look real close

maybe that .5" makes it harder to scratch on a curb?

I just saw a brand new black TL on the road when coming back from lunch. The five-spoked rims on it looked so dinky. They must be 16x6 or something.

The TL-S rides on 17" rims and if you look closer, you will notice that they do not protrude out from the sides of the tires like ours do. I believe they realized the problem and had Enkei design new ones that wouldn't scratch. TL's are on 16" rims and they are distinctly different than ours. They still look darn good (I have snows on them for winter).

I think it helps with the rubbing. I would guess that the rims weigh less, and the TLS should be slightly faster if the rims do in fact weight less (as they should).

Acura probably heard from a gillion CLS people about the scratching issue. The wider tires "help" the curb rash problem (I'm not sure about solving it -- ask some TLS people).

Do you guys think they are going to chicken out and put the 6.5"s on the new CL? That would be one thing we would have on them, no?

Would the 6.5"s be able to hold 225s? I don't think you could get 235s on them.

For some reason, though, the wheels on the TLs look a lot whimpier than ours.

The 225/45-17 on 6.5 inch width rims would be similar to the 235/45-17s being put on the stock CLS 7 inch rims. In both cases with a lot of tires, it is not recommended, but when you're within a 1/2" of the minimum size, you can get away with it.

When in doubt, check with the dealer AND the tire manufacturer.

A similarly constructed rim is generally lighter if narrower, so one advantage is reduced rotational inertia (the car accelerates faster).

If and when Acura decides to go with their 6-speed, they should loose some weight, put more power to the wheels, and they would be silly to not put better rubber on the car. It would be a shame to not see them keep the 7" wheels (or even go to a 7.5") with some max-performance rubber as an option.

BTW -- putting 235/45-17 tires on 6.5" width rims would be nuts, but some dealers will do anything for a sale -- don't be suprised when you see people doing it. What people don't realize is the tire is actually putting less rubber on the ground due to the lack of support from a wide enough rim.
