Cl-S beats 68 Trans Am

I have an 01' Cl-S and friend has a stock 68' Trans Am with a 6.6 liter 405 engine. He was always sayin how he would tear me in a race. Finally i told him that he would have to prove it, so friday after i got offa work we went out to this service road that runs besides the highway. we stopped, counted down and went. the road was a little wet so i spun them for a sec but then caught em and i was off. i left him totally behind suckin on my exhaust. he was atleast 8+ car lenghts behind me with no sign of gettin closer to me. i hit 120 and slowed down. since then we have raced 2 more times and each time i whooped up on him. once i even gave him a 2 second head start and still caught up and passed him quickly. now he respects my cars speed and doesnt call it JAP CRAP nemore.

well, first of all, the 1968 trans am didnt have a 405, it had a 400, and second of all, the thing was rated at 330 hp..if its the ram-air version, that was rated at 335 hp....thats 70-75 more hp than your car....how the hell would you beat a car with 70 more hp and probaly a shit load more torque as well??? this must be one baddly beaten down 1968 trans am.....or something is seriously wrong

no jim i'm sober thanks, the 6.6 litre motor offered in the trans am had 200hp@4k and 325 lb/ft of torque@22k. (i hit 3 not 2 before on the torque) What your thinking of is the 455 which came with 335hp and 480 lb/ft of torque. There is someting very mistakeable here. The FIREBIRD 400 came with 330 and ram aired to 335 or 340hp. The trans am came with a different motor.

Wasn't horsepower back in the 60's rated gross instead of net? If thats the case, what would 330 gross hp convert into "real" net hp?

Uhhhm guys I'm not saying this couldn't happen and I'm not trying to start an argument but there is no such thing as a 1968 Trans Am. The T/A was a trim and performance option starting in 1969, hence your anniversary T/A editions being 79' 89' etc. etc. As far as hp & tq numbers those are dead on

Oh by the way NJTypeS gross horsepower in the era of the muscle car was rated at the flywheel with all accessories removed. Catalytic converters, all accessory drive belts etc. But keep in mind that even these numbers were usually underrated especially in the 70's when insurance began to skyrocket. It's just like today if you have a v-8 car vs a v-6 of the same model the v-8 will be more costly to insure. Just trying to help

Hey fastvtecCL I live in Rocky mount about 45 mins east of Raleigh. I used to go to Charlotte quite a bit but haven't been in a while, I would stop there and hang out after going to Elkin. You're not very far from Elkin which believe it or not used to be the cruise capital of the east coast. It's a smal town in the foot hills but it was voted the best place to cruise by Hotrod magazine 5 years in a row. I would go to see some of my friends on Saturday and Sunday night you could sit outside of his place and never see the same car pass twice for hours yet the cruise traffic was bumper to bumper. You should check it out. Feel free to drop me a line maybe we can get together.

I dug up my collector car book. Here's the #'s (in net bhp)

230ci I6 165/215hp 1967
250ci I6 175/215/230hp 1968-1969
326ci V8 250/285hp 1967
350ci V8 265-330hp 1968-1969
400ci V8 335/345hp 1969

Enjoy LOL, definetly not this many engine options now!

Note: Some engines could be ordered at different HP specs.

And also 1969 was the 1st year with 400CI engine available. Also with ram air...

So if it's a 68, and it's a stock engine. It's something less than 400ci!
