Alpine makes a nice navigation unit for most cars. Check out their systems.

Occationally you find a stock one for sale with all the parts. But the Alpine one is supposed to be really good.

My wife just bought a GPS system by Garmen that she ordered from Costco. I haven't played with it too much to be able to compare it to my CL's built-in one, but so far it seems adequate. The screen is a bit too small for me.

Garmin 2620 and now the new 2720 are really good. I have the 2620 because I like to take it from car to car. Works great and easy to use. The whole US is preloaded. If you want to go in dash then either Alpine or the Pioneer AVNC1. I put the AVCN1 in my son's car and it works great.

ummm Alpine's Navigation kinda sucks and its expensive compared to the Pioneer one. You can get a AVIC-D1, double din and make it look stock, get a double din kit. Its awsome, has two drives one for the navigation disc and one for regular cd's. Fully Touchscreen and all, just NO VIDEO, you can add a dvd player if you want, but in that case might as well buy the AVIC-N2 and so you get dvd navigation and video.

Plus the navigation is way better on the Pioneer 12 Million Points of Interest as apposeto 2 million. Pioneer uses TWO Dual Layer DVD's as appose I believe two cd's from alpine. Alpine's you have to use the remote to use navigation, on the pioneer you can use the touchscreen. Go to a store, try the navi on a pioneer and look up things and so on and ask them to turn on the demo mode, and then try an alpine one. The alpine one is much more $$$ and less features.
My two cents.
BTW, I have a Pioneer AVIC-N2 in my car. And I work at a car stereo shop.

I thought i read in the car audio forums that the avic-d1 would not fit in our dash because the screws or something don't line up correctly. What kind of customization would be necessary if any? I know that a custom double din dash kit is needed.

You don't have to ISO mount the AVIC-D1 (meaning using screws from the side) you can use the cage and slide it in and bend the tabs with a double din dash kit.

I believe Street Effectz makes a double din kit, I actually just made my own. Get a Metra Kit and chop it out to double din then fibreglass and bondo and primer and color match spray can.

Looks like stock but holds my AVIC-N2 and my 16gb Harddrive

If you have more than one vehicle, I would recommend the Lowrance iWay 500c portable navigation system. I use it for my work truck and in my CLS. It's got a 5 inch screen (biggest of a portable unit so far), has 20 gigabytes built-in (no need to purchase additional memory, it's ready out of the box), doubles as an mp3 player (which can play through your audio system if you have an auxilary input like the blitzsafe adapter I have on my stock headunit), and it's built like a tank (Lowrance is a reputable company that has been in the marine navigation market for years). $800 is what I paid locally, but you can find it cheaper online.

I have the Pioneer Avic-N1 it great. I'm taking over my Dad's company and we produce aerial surveying for hundreds of different applications. Infact we just provided ONSTAR with new imagery of various cities/towns. We also give away the Garmin Navi system to prefered clients and tradeshow door prizes. The garmin is gret because it is so portable. You can find you detination in car or on foot.

I'd love to get stock navi system, but wouldn't we need a whole new dash kit and an extra temperature gauge cluster if we got a stock navi system?

Can one of you post pics of any of these aftermarket navi's after installation. How well do they look. If you don't mind. Thx.
