checking vs doing the valve clearance at 105K or otherwise

http://john-perry.com/acurazine/docu...aintenance.pdf
The 105K service says "check" the valve clearance (along with "check" the idle speed).
What exactly is this "check", how long should it take and how much should it cost?

What measurement determines if the valves should be not just be checked but indeed adjusted, and ditto how long should it take and how much should it cost.

Since a lot of our cars are turing 105K and having the timing belts replaced, did you at the same time have the valves checked and did they need adjusting?

Ac dealership service gal says adjusting is $300.

They have to remove the valve covers and use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance in order to check... At that point, there really isn't much involved to do the adjustment since everything is apart anyways...

Jim has pics here of when he did his adjustment ( about 1/2 way down post #2).

I recently got mine done. My valves were ticking like a champ when I went to the drive thru. Got them adjusted and the car is running much quiter. When idle its almost like the enigne isn't even running. I have 98k on my car.

you know they give you the specs on your hood......it shows what the clearance should be at. Mine where all out of spec at 98k. I got mine done local from a guy that works on J series motors for a good deal. $120 but since I had bought new valve cover gaskets and didn't need them, he bought them off me and I ended up paying $70.

Idle speed is not adjustable. Don't know why that is listed.

GreenMonster: Winner of the competency and courtesy award for the 12th straight year. (Okay i made up the years part). Thanks for the link with exacto pics! Now, must valves be adjusted after the new timing belt has been put in (as opposed to before. Would doing it before lose the adjustment after the new tbelt was put in?) It's a logistics issue, i have a friend with tools and know how whose time slot for helping me do the valves is now, like today. The tbelt won't be gotten to until next week.

fuzzy02CLS thanks for the idle speed info. You probably just saved me at least $100.

SPoolinspOON $120 to adjust the valves. Where does this local dealer come up with $300? Lets hope it's a misquote!

Local independent shops are always cheaper than the dealer...

If I make it to 105K miles, I'm going to have a friend of a friend who's a honda tech do my timing belt, etc.

I am pretty sure there is a Idle screw that is locktited down that can be used to adjust the idle on the throttle body. I will verify and get back when I get back to the car.

It was $120 from a local honda engine guru. Stealership quoted me at freaking $400.

As for doing it before or after timing belt it does not matter. I got my valves adjusted before my timing belt.

Service manual says it's not adjustable & to not attempt to adjust it. Yes there is a screw & it's locktight'd. But the idle is controlled by the ECU & some other sensors.
If someone messes with the screw it will screw the idle up.

And yes I did mess with it on my 02 auto & it never idled right again.
