Changing MTF!!

Been reading about the new Honda MTF and am going to change it tomorrow. Is there anything special to changing the MTF in the CL-S6? it's just drain and fill right? how many quarts should I need? 3? just double checking...

Answered my question after looking through the owner's manual. On page 251 it gives detailed instructions on changing the MTF. For those who don't have access to their owner's manual here is a link to the page online. https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/...303O00250A.pdf

If you haven't bought the stuff yet then dont. Just get the GM Synchromesh stuff, Penzoil makes it and sells it at autozone for $6.50 a quart. It works wonders, much better then the new Honda MTF, im saying this from experience, trust me I started to have grinding problems when I put the new stuff in and then it went away with teh GM stuff, its specialy made to "condition" brass synchros

Based on what you posted, you need to simply drain and fill?

Glasuan, yeah its basically drain and fill, make sure you don't over fill and use the check bolt procedure as in the owner manual.

I think the condition of the transmission has a lot to do with the grinding issues, currently I have no grinding issues with the current MTF in my transmission at all even when the car is cold. Im just changing it because it does feel a bit notchy when shifting. Im going to stick with the new Honda MTF and i'll update after a few weeks of usage.

Alright in the end its up to you, but I went through the same thing with my CLS tranny and its plain and simple likes the GM stuff better, oh and the stuff were using is not friction modified.

Most of the supercharged Accord guys and I use it, that includes SIRSIG too.
The grinding issue was just something that popped up with the new MTF fluid but I got the GM stuff because I thought it would make my shifts smoother and and you mentioned less notchy and it did

I too use it and noticed a big difference in how smooth the trans shifted after switching out. I would recommend it as well

My bro put it in his civic and noticed only a very small difference. I also want to try out Amsoils MTF fluid thats supposedly good for both Honda and GM cars.

Payed 12.99 for 3 quarts of Syncromesh. Changed it out and to tell the truth I didn't feel much of a difference, but than again I never had any problems before the flush.

I'm using the new Honda stuff, much improved over the old Honda oil.

Never tried the GM so I can't say....I am staying Honda product until I am out of warranty.

Well this is what I got from autozone for $6.50 a quart, its the NON friction modified version, which is great since we dont have a clutch type LSD and really dont need it too much.

From my previous times when using GM syncromesh it was always Friction Modified.......GMSFM. Last time I went to GM it was $8.xx/qt.

I use to work at goodyear and everytime I went somewhere to get parts I would say I work there and they gave me a discount. Just say you work at " " dealership and get a discount. Just becareful, sometimes they might call or ask for phone numbers.

Well I do work at Wheel Works... main concern now is the difference between regular SM and the friction modified stuff.... Where is the cheapest I can get GMSM FM? I searched online at autozone but it looks like they dont carry it.

are you positive it wasn't friction modified? $12.99/qt is awful for just syncromesh.

Maybe drain it out and put it back in its bottles to exchange it if possible?

Other then that I can't remember what the difference was between Syncromesh and Syncromesh Friction Modified.

Probably heard it from here

https://acurazine.com/forums/cooking-dining-47/back-food-forum-185873/

I bought it since I heard good things about it as well, not just on this forum but others as well. I'm waiting to get my clutch replaced before swapping the fluid...

My 03 CLS was intermittantly popping out of 1st. Put in the GM friction modified last thursday. Seems to be less resistance shifting (thiner fluid??) and haven't had it pop out of 1st again yet(not long enough to be meaningful though). Car has ~ 56K on it.

The popping out of first has been occurring since new. Dealers checked it out but never find shit! It used to occur once every few months, but had gotten to about once a week. I'm over 60 and have been driving various manual transmission cars for over a million miles; other than a 1956 opel cadet with a bad tranny I had in Germany while in the service, I've never had a transmission pop out of gear the way this one does.

I guess Honda/Acura is handling this problem the same way they handled their automatic tranny problems (head in the sand).

Anyway hope the GM stuff resolves my problem.

I used the GM stuff in my 95 Lexus SC300 and it made a huge difference. In the colder temps here in PA the shifting used to be very stiff and i would have trouble getting the car in 1st gear after backing out of a space, I got my fluid from the local GM dealer, I guess they use it in all of the corvettes and such.

When i do my 60k service on my 03 CL-S I am going to get 3 more quarts of GM. My shifting is fine now at 51k but from what i've read on here i don't want to take any chances.

yep, everytime I go get sycromesh friction modified they guy asks me what car i'm putting it in and I tell him a Honda and hes like......"why do we sell it here....I don't think i've ever heard of someone putting it in there GM. What car does this fluid go in?" I laughed and told him that the vettes take the fluid.
