Changed the Sound System

While waiting for the intercooler to be finished and then back on to gain more power with the blower, I decided I would go contrary to what I had originally planned and installed a sub.

I had previously decided I wasn't going to add a sub to this car as I had with all previous cars. But after some time having just the Pioneer amp installed in conjunction to the stock system and after replacing the front speaker, I determined I needed some bass.

And I am glad I did... The sound is so much better than it was with that touch of low end added. I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome.

Now I don't get into the best of breed stereo equipment since I really can't discern much difference particularly with the music I listen to. This satisfies my needs completely while retaining a stock appearance (which is key to me).

I previously had the Pioneer amp mounted in front of the jack door. But with the addition of the sub I decided I would change everything. So I picked up a Rockford amp and sub along with a variety of power distribution items and fusing. The intention was to retain as much of the trunk as possible and keep it clean. I didn't want a cube box sitting in the trunk with an amp strapped to it. But nor did I need to take the time to make it show quality since that is irrelevant to me. I built a box for the sub, sealed it tight and even did a pressure test on it; it is air tight. I also made provisions for the amps to be mounted to the same box on a wide back panel. This was then covered with peg board wrapped in carpet mounted on stand-offs with holes cut to see the amps. The nice part is that I have full access to the spare without moving anything. I can also remove the system in minutes if needed. I doubt the whole box weight more than about 50 lbs so the gain was negligible.

For power I ran some old 4G fine stranded wire I had at the office along with a power distribution block and fuse holder (60 AMP under the hood). I split off in the trunk with a fused distribution block and 20 AMP fuses to each amp. I ran 4G wire since I will also probably use this same lead to supply current for the fuel pump as the factory wiring just isn't enough. Especially with what is going in next.

The last part was the remote gain adjustment for the sub’s amp which is mounted in the dash in the spare slot next to the Cruise button.

BTW, I have extra 4G wire available and a ton of carpet if anyone wants this. Pictures are below:

Correct, it is putting out more than I even expected it could with a 175 Watt RMS amp. Must be the air tight enclosure at exactly 1.0 cubic feet.

I have some cut out for that. I am just waiting to unbolt the system for the fuel pump change to add it. The access is normally closed so I wasn't too urgent on that matter since it is never seen.

Nicely done Steve. Hollywood needs to discover you to build their next car for the next rendition of "Back to the Future"! I did think I was going to see child seats in there somewhere as you know kids love G-forces too!

How much carpet do you have? How well does it match? How much do you want for it?

Thank you,
Bill

Since they are still rear facing they will remain in my wife's Lexus. But I have my eye on a few seats that will look nice in the CL-S. And one of the girls already loves driving and the motion. We do simulated skid pad tests frequently and she loves watching racing and GT3.

I'll measure out how much is left but it is quite a bit. It matches very well as evidenced in the pictures. I'll see how much is left before I determine a price, but I don't think it would be more than about $10 - $15.

Sounds great to me; better than I expected. There may be more optimal locations or orientations but this works for my needs.

Yes, but it is minimal. I'll sacrifice 0.05 seconds on my ET for improved sound quality all of the time. Plus, it can be easily removed when I go to the track.

It's amazing how your proclaimed half-a$$ install is better than 95% of everything else we see...

Good work!
