Catback Exhaust Decision...

Hey guys,

I have a choice to make regarding my exhaust system and would appreciate any experiences, info., comments, or suggestions you may have.

Option one - Comptech Catback Exhaust. I suspect that the quality will be good and it will mount well, but not certain about the sound and look with the 3.5" tips.

Option two - Greddy EVO2. Once again, I suspect the quality will be good and that it will sound fine and I like the bigger 4.5" tips, but I don't care much for the huge cannisters hanging so low. I've seen some badly gouged Greddy cannisters out there.

Option three - Universal mufflers and fabricated exhaust piping. I know this setup will look good, but I'm not convinced that the quality and sound of the exhaust or the mounting will be up to par.

Perhaps there are even more options out there.

Decisions, decisions. That's why I need your input. Any comments welcome. THANKS...

If i ever decide to do exhaust, i think i'd go with just the comptech b-pipe. And if the stock mufflers get too boring, go with some magnaflow universals with rolled tips. just my

To each his own. We can't tell you what you will like. I have the EVO II and yes, they hang kind of low. My car is lowered and have never scraped the bottom of them. I also plan on raising them by either bending the hangers or the hose clamp method.

I just put on Comptech's cat-back (Nopi has them on sale for $845)..Installation was very easy to install. It took one hour with jack stands. Probably would've taken a little less if i had a lift. The sound quality to me, is unparallel. It's distinct, very deep. I love them. I was also hesitant at first, because i thought the stock tips look cool with the bumper cut-outs, but comptech's tips look bad ass. I highly recommend comptech cat-back system. You won't be disappointed at all. Don't shop for which one gives you the most hp gains, b/c you could spend your money more wisely elsewhere. Hope this helps...VERY VERY easy to install!!!

Unless you go FI there's no need to spend the $$ on a full catback. Just the mufflers will give you the sound. If you plan to then yeah go ahead & get it. I had the CT mufflers & were happy with them. They look best on the CL I think. The others are too big & take up way too much space. They make the car look riced. IMHO.

all of those options are good quality...its just personal preference after that.
but IMO if you want to spend that $ for exhaust go for it
im goin with the magnaflows, soooo much cheaper, good look, and good sound
comps-800ish
greedy-800ish
mags-160, installation 70ish

I have the Comptechs. I like the look and sound of them. But there is no real gain in power. So it's really up to you if you want to spend cash on them.

Thanks for the input guys. Much appreciated. One additional question. This will be my first exhaust upgrade, so please bear with me. If I go with the Comptech catback exhaust, which I am more inclined to do, is it possible and, if so, is it easy to install a different exhaust tip (perhaps different shape or a bit bigger, say, 4-4.5"). THANKS...

i have this set up Sebring Muffler tips (smaller size can)
22" Magnaflow Resonator
Custom 2.5" piping

w/o the resonater there was MAJOR raspy ricey noise goin on

w/ the resonator it sounds a lot better but it's still noisy as hell. and some of my friends tell me it still sounds a little ricey.

However the performance has DEFINITELY increase with the intake/header/cat back combo ... so it's give or take

i'm gonna have to agree w/ most of the people on here, i bought my comptech cat-back w/ b-pipe from smitty. Ever since the system on the car (w/ the headers), i honestly can't get enough of that deep exhaust note (especially between 2k-3k rpms). I wasn't even going to bother with exhaust originally, but for the price and since i was getting the headers (along w/ pretty much everything else) from him, i figured why not. I'm definitely happy with comptech and definitely recommend their cat-back system. It's all about the sound and it's not annoyingly loud, but loud enough to get noticed.

exhaust notes are all dependent on the muffler, diameter of the piping, and quality placement and use of RESONATORS.. there are three types of mufflers, chambered, straight through, and twin pass. chambered mufflers use reflection and restriction to dampen sound. straight through mufflers such as the n1 have very little sound absorption but others like the magnaflow have moderate absorption. the twin pass muffler is similar to the straight through mufflers but much quieter. The method used with this muffler to reduce noise is mainly absorption. The pulses have to travel through the muffler twice, which basically makes the muffler twice as long with twice the sound killing power. The twin-pass design flows as well as a straight-through but will sound much quieter. an example of twin pass is mugen. yes its expensive, but also the quietest and flows the best. my personal input would to do a CUSTOM job for your exhaust. headers, cats, y pipe, 2.5 piping, resonator, y pipe, piping, mufflers.
check out these articles. although they integra's, you will get an idea of the sound from the clips of different exhaust systems.
