Catalytic Converter advise on a 98 Honda Accord...
My girlfriend's Accord needs a catalytic converter according to the dealer. They want to charge her $800.00 to change.
I know this is too much for this repair. As long as her car can pass an emmisions test, does she need to make the repair right away?
Thanks for any input you guys can give me.

My girl's car has 90,000miles on it and is the 4cyl. model. From what I understand, Honda is the only place that can supply this part, so going somewhere else is not really an option. The part is about $450.
The labor according to other Honda places should only be about 60bucks. I guess this place is trying to rip her off.

You're right there may be an extended warranty on the catlytic convertor. If not Pep Boys should be able to do it for half that. Better yet get "race cats" this time around.

for $800 you can pass a couple times without the cat, but high flows are only 200ish and if you get it flanged it should bolt right on

According to what I've heard, the emissions warranty on the 98 CLs is to 140K miles or 14 years, I see no reason that the Accord should be any different. Someone here has the CL documents on their website. I'd be doing some research, else the Honda place may be pocketing $800 of your dollars, while still footing the bill to Honda.

How the heck does the computer know if the cat is messed up? I didn't think there were any O2 sensors after the cat. I don't have a check engine light on, just that smell...

Doesn't the back of the manual tell you all the warranties including emissions parts warranties?
Get a Hi-Flo Cat for like $200. Muffler shop shouldn't charge more than $100 to install. Meanwhile try to find a regular cat at a junkyard, aft. market, etc since the Hi-Flo isn't the greatest long term cat. Check www.v6p.net for more info on Accords.

I had a cat go out on my old Saturn. I took it to Saturn and they told me it was the cat and that if they did it would be expensive whereas midas or mineke would do it for real cheap. Take it to them first!
