Caring for a freshly painted car.....?

After they painted my hood, quarter panel, bumper, and blended my door.... they told me not to wash it for 30 days... and not to wax it for 120.

Is there ANYTHING I can do for the car between these grace periods?

It desperately needs to be washed... shit is just baking into the paint. What should I do?

Yeah, definitely don't wax it. Maybe you can just rinse it off a little?

Soopa you CAN wash it but only with H2O for the first 30 days and soap after that. I asked the body shop that did mine and read the pamphlet that comes with the paint. You should be fine, they should be baking the paint, as per original requirements which is also good protection.

Yea they DID bake it.

(Baked my Xephyr stickers right off my CAI )

So I will just hose her down gently... but... should i dry her after? Even just gently with one of my 100% cotton towels?

I would just hose her down and let her drip dry. The idea is not to use anything abrasive, if you have the Zaino car wash, and they apparently baked yours too, wait two to three weeks and wash but NOT wax her. I did this to mine and I have had no problems. So water for now and since it's been dry (low humidity) in two or three wash her with the Zaino car wash. A week or so after that go for the wax (there's very little effort to the Zaino stuff , ie no hard pressing). Good luck!

I got my back from having the rear end painted, the body shop said that whole 90+ day wait thing is a BS. They told me to wait a week and I can wash/wax her all I want.

Just to be sure I emailed Sal @ Zaino His Email is below

-----

There's alot of misinformation about waiting three months for the paint to
cure.

I am a custom painter by trade. I am very familar with Dupont, PPG and
all the other paint manufacturers.

The most I personally would wait on fresh "aftermarket body shop" paint
before
polishing with Zaino Show Car Polish is 1 week. That's more than sufficient
curing time.
Zaino contains no wax, silicone oil or abrasives.....

The new paints are catalyzed. A chemical reaction cures the paint. The
older lacquers and enamels needed time for the solvents to release. This
is not the case anymore. Believe me if that paint need 3 months to dry
than it will never dry.... Just the facts.

Interesting.

But whats strange is... my paint is still kinda tacky. Maybe its just cuz its not smooth as the waxed portion of my car?

The body shop I had my work done at said that I could wash as soon as I wanted, the only thing I shouldn't do was wax for 90 days.

How did your car turn out Soopa?

Not too shabby. A bit of an "orange peel" effect going on... the shop said it would smooth out a bit as it dries... and if it didnt smooth enough they would buff it out for me. I dunno

But otherwise... matched very well... shines great... it is as bright as the 3-layer Zaino panels on the rest of the car.

Be careful...don't speak too soon. My friend was telling me that he can make the car look awesome right out of the shop, but the first time you go and wash the car..you'll notice the imperfections.

I wouldn't let it drip dry. The calcium deposites in hard water will etch right into that virgin paint. Perhaps it would be best to take to to a do-it-yourself carwash it wash it with the spray gun and finish the process with the spot free rinse (soft water). With my experience paint tends to get MORE orange peel as it cures. After I had my Accord repainted I had to take it back twice for color sanding, but I'm REALLY anal about the quality of paint. I threw down some serious cash to have that car repainted, and while it smoother than the factory black, it still can't compare to the quality. I think if you lightly wash it, even if you dry it with soft towels, you'll be okay. Just my personal opinion.

that sounds like complete BS to me-you should NOT have any orange peel-$30K car. remember!? i would def get them to buff it for ya-just make sure they do it right. my last car almost got a new paint job after some drunk old fuck ran his mobile home down the side of it. they buffed everything beautifully, but they screwed up the paint around the door and window edges-oh yeah, and dropped the buffer on my spoiler and scraped one of my tail lites. they fixed most everything, but they car never looked 'new' again.
just make sure they don't screw you and do a half-ass job. glad your car is back

I had my passenger door and front quarter panel painted last fall after a hit and run in Home Depot parking lot. The body shop told me no wax for 30 days. I waxed after 30 days with no problem.

I think they meant "NO PASTE WAX" for 30 days. That is what they told me yesterday when I asked them about the fresh paint on my car they just had done. Any other wax is fine.

You should have ZERO orange peel effect on the car! When mine was done both metal and plastic were as smooth as could be. I don't believe that much buffing was involved either as I have no swirls.

It should be okay for you to rinse it off with water. They just want you to stay away from soap and wax which can contaminate the paint before it completely cures.

When you guys are talking about "orange peel effect" I am assuming you mean the very small dips or dimples all over the car in the paint? I don't know about you guys but im pretty sure even my factory paint had these. I mean they are very small and insignificant and you have to look really close to notice them. Most cars i've seen have these.

While the paint will cure quickly, this might be a clearcoat issue. You may need time for this to cure unless they bake this on too...

Right. All cars have these... but they are just a lil more pronounced on the repainted parts then the factory painted parts.

Not enough to throw off anyone whos not looking.

But right... all cars have orange peel from the factory... in fact... the Acura MDX is NOTORIOUS for its extremely dimpled paint job. It looks like it has been repainted straight from the factory.
