What kinda car did you learn to drive in???
My mom had a 1984 chevette brown, 4 speed manual!
The brown inside of the car would get so hot in the summer, it was unbelievable
Now have a 2003 cls6... i don't miss the chevette...
... it wasn't even called a chevette... in canada, Pontiac had their version of the chevette called Pontiac Acadian. Same car, different name.
by the way, I'm in Quebec where we speak french, and the Buick Lacrosse is coming out next year, but they'll have to change its name for canada. Because in canadian french, Lacrosse can mean to jerk off. The buick Jerkoff does not promise big sales... they don't know yet which name to choose.

'82 Datsun 810 Maxima. Inline 6 with 3spd tranny. Sunroof didn't work and neither did the cassette tape, but otherwise much better than some friends. Name changed to Nissan and dropped the 810 in '93 forward.

This is a hoot! In '65 Mom bought a stripper Mercury Comet, 6 banger, three on the tree. She was soooo worried about the clutch on that thing that when I got my permit in '66 we would go to used car lots on 82nd street auto row to" test drive" cars. If the lot let us take off alone, we'd go to nearby Mt. Tabor ( a huge park on an inactive volcano). There I learned smooth clutch actuation and parallel parking on steep hills and not abusing Moms cute little blue two door. Probably some of the best saturday afternoons we ever had together. Some of the worst saturday afternoons came a year later as I was attempting to explain what had happened to her car the night before.

hehehe...same exact fuking car. year and everything except mine was a gasoline engine. I learned to drive manual on this car. I learned to drive in general in a 1987 Minivan.

It was a nice little car. My mom loved it.
I actually got to drive my CL-S a little when i was still learning. First time out i was scared as fuck because my dad was SUPER uptight about it (he made me read the god damn owner's manual before driving it!), and i went onto a pretty busy road during rush hour. I did ok; his yelling is what threw me off. I refused to drive with him after that.
The next time i drove it was right before he died - went to the local Subway for sandwiches cause he was feeling bad. It's crazy - he was in the hospital like 2 days later, and dead within a week.
Eeek, i got all soft on you guys :P

Well, I learned how to drive stick back in India when I was 12, on a ... I forget what year
Maruti (Suzuki) 800 (meaning 800cc engine)
No idea what kind hp or anything it had, but I wouldn't guess more than 50.

Once I got the hang of that boat driving & parking any car was like a go-kart. He still has it too, 200k+ (speedo is broke) ad is still on original tranny fluid and has only had maintenance done.

I miss my 03 CL-S :(
1989 Ford Tempo, and also a late 80s Camry Stationwagon with NO power steering. If you can parallel park a car with no power steering, you can do anything.
Although I also got a lot of practice after getting my permit on my mom's 1993 Nissan Sentra.

I "married my first piece" because I still have the first car I've ever driven 22 years ago, an '81 Porsche 911SC. It was a birthday/hs graduation present from my grandparents who really didn't know that it was a sports car when they asked me what kind of car I wanted. They were from "the old country" and couldn't understand how such a small car could cost so much money back then. That clutch was and still is one of the toughest clutches I've ever driven, but man I love that car and am looking forward to handing it over to my son on his 17th birthday (in 15 years).

My family never had a car. There's no need living in Bronx NY. None of my poor ass friends had 1 either. Drivers ed in school was too expensive for me. So when I moved out, I had to pay a driving school to learn how to drive. They had Toyota Corolla's. I then learned stick on my first car an 87 F150.

Auto: 1982 Olds Delta 88. I'll never forget when I was 14 and my Dad having me drive down a fairly busy backroad in a car that took up 3/5 of the road!
Stick: Seems a popular choice, but 1984 Rabbit 4-spd Wolfsburg Edition. It was actually a pretty tough little car to get the clutch down on, and certainly didn't have much power (around 80hp, if I recall correctly). Still a fun little car.
