Car won't shift out of "P"

Hello, when I apply brake, the solenoid in the lever does not activate to unlock and shift out of "P"... have to do it by pressing the over-ride button next to lever. Same thing happens trying to shift up from "N" to "R". Brake light switch is working (brake lights turn on). Where can I start looking for problem? Should I first check if I'm getting signal at the solenoid when pressing brake? Also, indicator in dash stays in D5: could that have something to do? The sensor that detects lever position (P, R, N, D, etc) is located inside tranny?

Sorry if my previous post is similar... in that one I was not able to describe problem very well.

Car does not start with switch (it makes sound exactly as when you try to start in "D" position... just click) - I can start car if I feed current directly into starter motor.

All help is very very highly appreciated.

There is a small removable tab on that same plate where the PRND4321 is located. If you remove that small tab and press a screwdriver into that hole I think it should let you shift. Just temporary solution.

Under normal circumstances after I start my car then press the break, I hear a small click where the shifter is and that let's me know when I can shift. Do you hear the click? If not I would think that the particular mechanism activated by the brake pedal may be the culprit.

I found these links outlining the same issue. First response is always "use she shift override" LOL. But other causes listed:
1. Brake light fuse/ Horn fuse/ STOP fuse blown.
2. Neutral safety switch under brake pedal.

This second posting on the last link reminded me of the switch under pedal. I actually had the issue before and my brake pedal was loose. Turns out that because it was traveling left and right it wasn't pressing the neutral safety switch when I pressed the brake pedal. Hope these help.
