Car designs...
Why do people argue about, "car A has a similar design to car B, car B has similar design to car C, car C has a similar design to car A, etc..."
How many ways can a car look before they all resemble each other in one way or another?
For the most part, every car is going to have 4 wheels/tires, grill, engine, windshield, roofline, etc...
The new Lexus GS does resemble the current Maxima. This might be good or bad.
HOWEVER, its all in the execution. Lexus execution of the GS design is superb and shows that they spent time on the details because its marketed for a different market. On the other hand, the Maxima is more main stream and does not have perhaps the same quality.
Blah, blah, blah...

You're j/k
The new GS looking like a Maxima could be bad. Last I heard, Nissan hasn't sold many of the new ones. Not too many people dug the body style. This could pose bad for Lexus. But who knows.

Execution...
Yes they are similar.
But this is a Lexus not a Nissan.
Quality vs Quantity.
But my point is that cars will resemble each other one way or another - whether its the grill, front bumper, C-pillars, etc... Thus the determining factor is how the Manufacturer executes the design.
Execution and understanding what the market want is key.
Thats why the new GS perhaps will have AWD as an option?

I get upset when KIA hijacks the styling cues from the Lexus RX 330 and makes a damn good looking vehicle because of it and not get sued. Then they turn around and make the front end of their sedan look similar to a Benz.
I hate the fact that a majority of the cars on the road tail lights are triangular and look too similar from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Yes, all cars have to incorporate certain items into the design to be functional (and safe and aerodynamic) but this is far from an excuse to have all cars look too similar to each other.
