Can you over rev. a cls-6spd.

Got a 03 6spd. cl-s with comptech header, b-pipe and ice-box. Its now sitting in acura of clevelands garage with preliminary inspection with a cylinder checker of having a valve hit no.2 piston. I'm almost 4 months out of warranty with 22k miles on it. The mechanic says he's seen this kind of damage on some rsx's and it was caused by over reving. I thought and had expeirenced this happen before when you hit redline it cuts out you cant over rev unless you downshift from 6th to 2nd by mistake. They dont want to give me any help with the cost at this point. their in the process of tearing it down at this time. Prior to this condition a I had a slight miss at idle which eventually showed up as a check engine light. Checked it with the scan tool and had missfire on #2@4 cyls. I then cleared the light thru in some fuel injection and drove it. I wound it up in 1st hit 2nd and then it wouldn't run much below 1500 rpm with missfires on all cyls . Now its sitting in the shop in need of a new head and piston.Their supposed to start mon. tearing it down at the tune of about $600. to prove the damage was done by over rev. I believe something else electrically was failing which caused the over rev condition . Any thoughts on this .

Sure sounds like an over rev to me. Even with the cut out if you wind it hard in the lower gears you can do it.

Even at high rpm you still can't over rev. That's what the limiter is for. The only way I know is if you missed a downshift & the RPM's shot up past the limiter. Are you the orginal owner? Was it a demo car by chance? Did you let anyone drive it that may have done this?

All the rev limiter does is cut the ignition, if you are at the top in a low gear the internal inertia (crank, flywheel, etc) can keep the engine turning and accellerating. Also if you drop the clutch while you are up there and take the load off the engine can spin up.

Don't you believe for a minute that the limiter will protect you in all situations.

the limiter will protect you enough in normal situations the ECU would clearly show a misshift over rev like from 3rd to 2nd instead of fourth...

I'm the original owner, no one else has driven the car but me. I didn't miss a shift and at best when the incident happened I was at best near redline. I would think before you bend a valve or any other damage you would have to push it to about 8000rpm or so. I believe something was failing that affected the timing to cause this damage. I guess I'll find out on mon. what's wrong along with the rest of the b.s.

Does your car fall into the timing & water pump recalls? There's a thread on here about what vin's are effected. Search on that. If those were not done it could cause a problem.
