an aftermarket one = yes.

Factory one = no. I am sure this could be done but I am sure that the expense would be very prohibitive.

It has been done before.

If you can find the complete kit on ebay or wherever it would cost around what the option went for new from the dealership.

This is one that was sold by a fellow member awhile ago:

I remember seeing pics on here of someone doing the conversion for the factory nav. Takes a lot of time and money.

The one Chap pointed out still may be for sale, if so, it is well documented and can be done in a weekend with some help from a friend or two.

Someone else had an 8" navi for sale, with the cd player and everything else, not sure what car it came from, but it was a nice setup, and probably well documented since it was from the same guy who sold the one Chap pointed out.

MrSteve is the one who had the OEM navi for sale, PM him if he doesn't see this post and see if he still have it available.

Now if I could just find someone competent enough to do the install that won't charge me an arm and a leg

I wonder if this system would fit well. It is double-DIN.

And it looks

They need to combine the 20gig HD/MP3 capabilities of the AVN2454 with that, and you'd basically have a dream head unit.

The problem with the CL is that it isn't a true dual din, it's a din 1/2 chassis. The dual din decks require a bit of fabricating to mount correctly.

I just installed an Alpine navigation system with a flip out screen-install isn't all that difficult at all! If you've wired a headunit before, you can install it!

I think the eclipse unit looks more OEM compared to a flip out system. Also a flip out monitor also requires some fabrication to get it to mount in the lower portion of the space where the factory head unit sits. Otherwise when the screen pops out it will cover the lower portion of the climate control buttons.

OEM looking parts > aftermarket flashy parts

Was quoted no less then $200 by 6+ places for a custom mounting kit..

Needless to say I got rid of the unit and am going with the Navi conversion and aftermarket radio..

The clarion VRX units stick out like a foot--it's horrible, most of the other brands are a lot more flush.

Jonesi, where'd you get that kit from to house the dvdplayer/monitor? Was it a custom job?

No that's just the metra kit... I tried to have one made but they all wanted over $200 to put the opening at the bottom.. I couldn't justify the cost so I got rid of it and went with the Navi conversion instead..

That one was sold to Mr Steve and then Steve sold it to someone on here local.. Nobody wanted to do the leg work.. I offered to do it for Steve but it just so happened a Supercharger became available and he wanted to unload the Navi..

Edit: damn chaps beat me to it.. focker..

Jonesi you could still come down and do the install if you're feeling generous this holiday season. What kind of beer/liquor you drink?

You will need:

Screen
Navi disc and "brain"
Dash trim w/ hazard light button
Wiring harnesses
Climate control buttons
Manual to instruct you what wires need installed where.

For those of us that dont have navi but want to put an aftermarekt unit in (and still keep the stock h/u), can we simply swap out climate control w/ the one the "slim version" to make room for the navi screen? are parts 3 and 2 needed, or just 2?

I'm confused by your post. Where would you mount the aftermarket unit?

A/M unit would go in the same spot that the oem unit does. the setup would be exactly the same as the stock navi set up, just that you'd have an am screen rather than an oem screen. I'd assume that you'd either have to buy piece 4 and slightly mod it, or just mod what we already have to fit the A/M screen in there.

I thought the cars with Navi had some of the climate controls integrated into the screen along with the buttons on the slim unit?

Yes they do. The A/C controls are integraded with the navigation. Thus, you can't install a screen whre the climate controls are located unless it is the OEM navigation screen which has inputs for the A/C.
