California Snow People with CLS -- what do you do?

Here are the road conditions for the snow conditions in California. What do you folks do when they require chains/cables for your CL Type S. Please note I've read the manual and know that the manual says no cables or chains.

BTW -- Interesting that the CLP can use cables, CL-S can't. Even Acura Care is boggled on this one.

Chain Requirements:

R1: Chains are required - snow tread tires allowed.

R2: Chains are required on all vehicles except four wheel drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels.

R3: Chains are required - all vehicles - no exceptions.

R1 and R2 are the most common conditions. The highway is usually closed before an R3 condition is imposed.

I just had a friend and family in condition R3, but they had 4 wheel drive *and* cables.

Chain Controls:

You must stop and put on chains when highway signs indicate chains are required. You can be cited by the California Highway Patrol and fined if you don't. You will usually have about a mile between "Chains Required" signs and the checkpoint to install your chains.

Control areas can change rapidly from place to place because of changing weather and road conditions.

The speed limit when chains are required is 25 or 30 miles an hour and will be posted along the highway.

When you put on chains, wait until you can pull completely off the roadway to the right. Do not stop in a traffic lane where you will endanger yourself and block traffic.

Chain Installers: If you use the services of a chain installer, be sure to get a receipt and jot the installer's badge number on it. Remember, chain installers are independent business people, not Caltrans employees. Having the badge number may help with any misunderstandings later. Chain installers are NOT allowed to sell or rent chains.

When removing chains, drive beyond the signs reading "End of Chain Control" to a pull-off area where you can safely remove them.

I take the wife's Integra. Not our fault we have to use tire chains, the CHP make you put on chains sometimes 10 miles from where there is any snow. I like the way it is done in Utah. Once on a trip from Grand Canyon Nat'l Park south rim to Brice Canyon Nat'l Park at the end of December we stopped for fuel in Bluff, Utah. There was a state trooper stopped there and I asked if I would need chains for the road ahead. He asked where I had come from and when I told him, he said that if I did not have them on by then I probably would not need them. BUT, if he had to pull me out of a ditch and chains were not on I would receive a ticket. Let the driver take the responsibility for his own actions; what a concept!

Probably he was talking about Lake Tahoe... or the mountains.
Instead of suffering with "how do I get those chains on?" - rent a 4x4 :-)

If chains are required, I'll have my dad take me in his ML320. If they require chains on 4WD vehicles, Its time to stay home.

Final comment -- I actually don't care about going to the snow. I just got asked the question by people who liked the car, but couldn't believe that the car would be "trapped" up in a snow area (in California's mountain and other areas).

They said that they would never buy the car for this reason -- go figure...

I love my car, wouldn't change my choices. I just think Acura would do themselves a favor by clarifying the cable issue.

Did anyone ever consider freak weather?

Eric, tell what to do.

Go to the dealer where you bought your CLS. And just say this:" Unless you show me how and where to solve this issue (nothinhg in the man... blah blah blah), I am sorry I can not comply with state mendated orders (having chains), I am sorry you would have to reimburse me any incurred expenses due to this "defect", said expenses may include citation tickets, towing charges, and a 4x4 rental SUV expenses" and have a big "

I assure you you would get your problem solved in less than 24-hrs.

I almost got snowed in in Lake Tahoe this past weekend. They lifter the chain requiremnet 10 minutes before I got to the check point. I can definitely say that the VSA really helps in the snow. My light kept coming on as I was slided in the snow.

How can a car manufacturing company F*$k up so bad and not even consider that people might have to put chains on the car one day?
