Cable linkage shifter?

What's the advantage? The C&D article says they're heavy-gauge cables worthy of a suspension bridge. Then why not just just solid rods? Is is a weight issue? And how will it feel in 50k miles? ALL cables stretch over time. But will it be enough to matter? Or is it something that can be (or should be) replaced at some point?

never heard of a problem

A lot of front drive cars have cable linkage manual trans. (including honda). I've never heard of or experienced an aging problem.
