A/C panel filters -- tons of makes, prices, etc

I was about to pick-up some "factory" A/C panel filters and thought that $17.00 each x 2 was a bit "pricey

In addition to the Purolator, there now seems to be a number of filters with different/varying technology that are available for the CL/CLS/TL/TLS.

Has anyone thought about any quality issues regarding the Fram? The Purolator? The OEM? Others?

What was the best price you got, who made it, and where did you get it.

Here is a link from the Purolator site that ends up with a FRAM replacement filter SET (2) for $24.99 (shipping included).

Well, you got a great deal...

E-mail reply from A&H (www.ahmotor.com) today (partial):

"...The price of $9.95 is old. The current price is $15.00 each..."

Back to the dealer...

Sorry to dig this up.

For those in the Northeast, Strauss Discount has the Purolator cabin filters on sale this week for $7.99 each (reg $9.99).

I cleaned out the store in North Bergen. Expect a thread with comparison pics of both filters shortly.

I'd like to see the pics.

Also curious about the Fram...

As I mentioned, a lot of people are making the filters now. The question is -- how good are some of them (especially some of the “cheaper” ones)…

“Pennywise, pound foolish” comes to mind!

Pictures and reviews would sure be nice. I sure wouldn’t mind saving nearly 50% for something that is as good or better than stock!

EricL, what about Air Filter ( not for A/C ), can I also get it at this website? It should be easy to install....

its cheaper at http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.net/
$7.36 each

EricL,
The real cost for our OEM filters is around $6. Dealers would charge probably twice as much, or even more.

And the OEM filters are not that bad either, very thick and solid construction.

NAPA stores have them too, or can get them in one day, about $10 if I remember right.

The price really did go up on the “factory” air filters (or there is a “panel-filter conspiracy” ). I’ve had a few people confirm this.

IMO, Honda/Acura generally supplies good “consumables” for their cars: air filters, oil filters, etc, etc

I called acuraautomotiveparts.net to verify the price shown on their web page. I was told the website page -- with the A/C parts -- is going to be updated to reflect the increased cost of some items (ie panel filters).

I asked what the "discount price" per filter was -- the rep said they had gone up in price and are $12.00 each (discount column price).

Still, the best price for a factory filter so far...

If you mean at the web link at the top of the thread -- yes.

Here is the link for that page:

http://www.partsamerica.com/SelectPa...cent=&MfrCode=

There is a FRAM and PURLOLATOR listed (among others listed on that page). I don't know how they compare to factory.

IMO, it is easy to install...

Ok guys, it finally got warm enough for me to attempt the panel filter replacement with the Purlators I purchased earlier this week.

Here's a pic of one the new filters -

Here's the old dirty Honda one and the other new Purolator. Construction, filter material thickness and quality appear to be identical. I should note that I only have 11,000 city miles on my CL which was acquired September of 2001. (That represents about 300 trips through the Lincoln Tunnel, urban soot and perpetual construction near my home.) -

Here's a close-up of the markings on the side of the filters and an explanation as to why the quality is so similar (Top-Purolator, Bottom-Honda) -

It appears as if both filters are actually made by the same company, MicronAir. They both even have the Micron Air's part number stamped on them, HN98104P. After reading up on the company I am not surprised.

So, IMHO, the Purolator filters are an acceptable if not identical substitute for the Honda filters. And at $7.99 each, I think I got a pretty good bargain.

How often should we change it? Also, are there any filters that are better than stock? That may filter better or need changing less frequently?

There is a procedure here but the pictures don't work anymore, A-c-u-r-a-w-o-r-l-d has a better one. Just requires a search.

The change should be done @ about 20K miles.

It seems there aren't any filters that really are super duper premium just different names for the same thing.

I just got a pair (same box as pictured above) Purelotar C15390 from pepboys. I paid $10.99 and savings of $8 over MSRP.

I replaced the stock one at 30k miles (with 2 Honda's filters) and now at 48k miles. I would replace it at 50k miles.

I think the Helms state replace at 30 kmiles or each 2 years. The Purelotar box states replace each 12-18 kmiles.

Nashua.

If you did not install the filter yet, would you please measure it for me. I want to see if it will fit in my 2002 RSX.

I saved some old directions from jens. Very simple with his instructions.

To access the interior air filters you will need a Phillips screw driver a pocket flat blade screw driver and a sharp knife. Open the glove box and empty it of whatever you have been hiding in there.

There is a air piston on the right side that slows the opening speed it is attached to the door with a screw, remove the screw, pop of the air piston.

There are two stops on the inside the glove box, pop both out with the small flat blade.

The glove box will now open downwards, there are two Phillips screws holding the door to the dashboard structure, remove both screws; the door can now be removed.

You will now see two Phillips screws that appear to hold nothing in place, remove these -- leave the metal clips in place.

There is a serrated panel visible it must be cut away from the dashboard structure, save this panel as it is to be reused later.

There is now a vertical white plastic panel visible that can be snapped out of the way and removed.

The filters are the two vertical boxes now visible; remove the bottom one first by pulling it towards you then lower the upper one and remove it as well.

Exchange the filters noting that they have arrows on them for airflow; the boxes that contain the filters are marked as well. Install the filters in the boxes and reassemble the filters in to the air box . Take the white panel and snap it back in place.

Now take the previously cut out plastic panel and turn it so the two hooks engage the two slots in the dash structure, the two screws that did not do anything are now used to secure this panel in place.

Reassemble the glove box in reverse fashion from disassembly.
.
This job should take you about twenty minutes or less.

Jens

Now how about an alternative for an engine air filter?

#5 in Diagram above for CLP.

#5 above for CLS.

EricL,
The real cost for our OEM filters is around $6. Dealers would charge probably twice as much, or even more.

And the OEM filters are not that bad either, very thick and solid construction.
They may be cheaper but if you include the $5.00 handling charge then the total would be $20.00, $10.00 for each filter

I just picked up a set at NAPA this last weekend, $10.22 each. Did notice they had less filter panels inside so the filtering will have less area. But I got them and didn't have to wait.
