Buying Used

Hey guys, as per my introduction post, I'm really considering an 01-02 CLS in the spring. What should I be looking at in terms of used, like parts or things that tend to go bad on these cars I should keep an eye out for? I'm pretty mechanically inclined but its always nice to have the opinion of current owners on what to watch out for.

well as you may know the trannys are having problems... read up on the tranny posts before you go forward and buy a CLS. i have an 03 and have had no problems... i only have 13,500 on the car however...

tha trannys seem to be the biggest problem... but there are a list of other things that people have experienced... best of luck... iam sure others will post...with their experiences

Yes, tranny problems are a sure first.. Although I'm at 69k with no problems yet.. But there's also the warping rotors caused by overheating... Also the sunroof rattle..

My rotors are warped. That's why. Is this covered by warranty? The sunroof rattle can be fixed by the dealer with tape. I bought a stick so no worries about the tranny going out.

yup same for me... i havent had any issues... but i do get that sunroof squeak... i have read that its the rubber rubbing against the metal opn the edge of the sunroof... so teflon tape is supposed to fix that..

but yeah...mine is strong besides that ...

Actually Andy, some of the 03 Auto's ARE included in the powertrain warranty extension.

and Seriously, I don't think a dealer will turn down a 'warranty claim' on one that was not included, due to the known failure of the trannies. Unless of course you are supercharged/or Nitrous'd, then they can bitch

yea only some of the later model 03s were not extended the warranty....i talked to the service guy at pasadena and he checked it for me, and he was like yea they fixed the prob on the later models thats why it wasn't extended, so yea if i wanted to get the extension i gotta pay for it (as for mods, don't have any on my car)
