Buying my second acura - CL sooooon.

Hello my azine CL-ers.

I'm looking to trade one of my other cars for a 2nd gen acura CL. Besides the transmission problems, is there anything else that I need to look for or worry about when buying one?

Should I go the distance and try to get an type-s?

Any links or info would be much appriaciated.

an auto CL-P will do just fine for a daily driver...wait are you looking for a daily driver??

if you are looking to mod a CL, the ONLY option is a 2003 6speed manual!!

as for me, I dont have a type S, but "only" an auto CL-P...I added headers, CAI, and pulleys and currently have stock Type-S 260HP. With this my transmission did go out and cost me $3500 to repair but came with a 3 year warranty!

the reason I tell you that is because if you find one that just got the 2nd tranny replaced BY ACURA dealer!, dont look away so fast: it should be fine for 3 more years and thats the one you should buy. my car is indeed PERFECT now, but this is the "fear" everyone mentions when they say "dont buy an auto",but really, just buy one that was already replaced, BY ACURA only tho, and you'll be fine!

but definitely dont be discouraged if an auto CL will be your respected daily driver, it'll be fine...plus looks like you got your TL 6 speed to mod.

Wayne,
other than the transmission "issue" i talked about above, really no other major problems with this car as long as it has been taken care of [goes for any car!].

another somewhat common issue is CD player getting jambed or not working any more, so id check that as well before you buy.

+1 on the CL-S6.

Look behind the weatherstripping on the doors, sometimes rust forms there. Look for leaks from the rear main seal, oil pan, tranny. Other then that, just normal used car stuff.

I'm sure he'll chime in soon, but I think Noah has always regretted not looking around a little longer and getting an CLS6.

He and a lot of people.

but I would look for a Type-S. They should be as easy to find as a CL-P. And if you can, get a CL-S 6spd. More fun, faster and more reliable tranny.

Werd. CL-S 6-speed or nothing. More power to the wheels, LSD, no tranny issues, and more.

its true what these guys say about the 6speed, it should be your only choice...my posts above are for the case when you cannot find a great deal on a 6speed...there are only about 3500 ever made...

keep us posted on what you end up with...

The new trannies they are putting in the autos after 05 are all good it seems..
my 3rd one is holding up very well. Just like any car you beat on it and dont take care of it , Its gonna have things go wrong premature..
Other then the trannies In the 9 years that I owned mine this past month has been the worste, but stupid things.. My coil pack went causeing the engin to shake really bad and not go over 50MPH , I coil pack later and its good and I just had my AFTERMARKET shock fall throughh my fork (disign flaw) other then that it has been maintence free and everyone is suprized on how GREAT it still runs at 169k miles.. And those where not a pampered 169k miles 100k of them where done in V-tech over 4500 rpms!

Hey guys,

Thanks for the info. I'm honestly only looking for a CL to use as a winter car. I know it sounds f'ed up, but I love how the car looks and I really want the best of both worlds. I currently use an 98 honda accord as a winter car, but that thing is gonna cost me a fortune pretty soon, once winter hits again, (so many things to fix).

If I can find a 6spd, for sure I'd grab it, but honestly over here in Vancouver, it's pretty hard to find one. I'm 90% sure it's going to be an automatic, and prob a 02 or 03 type-s hopefully.

As for modding, I'm gonna try to stay out of the CL - parts and mods section. I really wanna keep the thing stock, esp. when I'm gonna use it for only winter.
Just curious, did they ever make white CL-S ?

Once, I find the right CL and pick it up, I'll be posting pics up asap.

Last I checked, there was a white one for sale in the north east. I'd cry if you use it for a winter car though.

Honestly, I'll prob ending up modding the shiz out of it and loving it more than the TL. (Hopefully no 3rd gen guys see this hahahah).

My "reason" for getting the CL, is I need a new winter car...

I've been up to Vancity quite a lot when I had my CL...I never saw too many up there. I had a couple of people ask me what I drove because they didn't know, but admired it.

add the comptech transmisson cooler and redline tranmission fluid and you'll never have a problem with the AT tranny. A mechanic at my dealership said that's what he did to all the comptech supercharged AT CL's and they never had a problem. He's replaced about 100 CL transmissions in only the past 4-5 years! and he said everyone who opted to do the trans cooler and the redline fluid has has zero problems.

Now i'm sure they were'nt beating the HELL out of their cars or tracking them..but it's a CL... contemporary luzury... it does it's job

Hey guys, I had a chance to look at 2 CL-S today. Both we'ere in total crap condition. There are only 3 local CL-S for sale in my area, so hopefully the third one will be a winner. Will keep you guys updated!
